This morning, I checked all the Zed's lights then washed all the exterior glass, lights and mirrors in readiness for tomorrow's MOT.

Never a bad idea to spruce the car up for an MOT - I'm sure the tester appreciates it. My 26 year-old campervan had an MOT yesterday - I'd filled all the rust holes in the sills, given them a coat of something black and sticky, washed and polished her, and coated the plastic bumpers with tyre slick (makes them look like new).

Then she had a full valet inside, just to finish the job off.

She passed with flying colours!

Good work.  I'm looking forward to that feeling tomorrow.

I think it makes a good impression to present a clean car for its MOT.  It shouldn't make a great difference, but I'd also like to think a decent tester can differentiate between a scruffy vehicle that's had a quick once over and a generally well cared for specimen - hopefully.  If it also dissuades them from giving it a quick wash themselves - in case I forget to gently mention it beforehand - then so much the better.

I hope it's a dry day for your MOT.

If you get a chance, can you ask the tester if delamination on a windscreen (out of the wiper sweep) is acceptable or a failure?

The Zed paid a visit to Japtech in Hull today for a (sort of) P3 service and MOT today, and . . . we are licensed to spread pornography for another year. :bounce:  :drive1

It failed its first MOT, as the backbox had developed the usual slight leak near the flange. I thought it might be blowing a bit, but hadn't realised it was as bad as that.  That said, the garage was very good and very fair - they slapped a bit of exhaust filler paste over the hole and got me a pass with just that as an advisory.  They also got me a quote for an OEM backbox (as nowhere nearby had anything aftermarket), which, at £380 all in, I didn't think was too bad.  However, as it didn't matter for another year, it was left with me.  I did say that I keep being tempted by an aftermarket system, so it was quite good news in a way and they added that they'd be happy to fit it for me if I didn't want to bother, and I said I might take them up on that.

Overall I was happy with the service (with a lower case 's' intentionally), except for the fact the Zed looked filthy when I got it home.  It was covered in water spots.  I'm not sure if it was overspray from other vehicles being cleaned, although it seemed to be concentrated on the bonnet, with a bit on the leading edge of the roof and the top of the bootlid, so it might be the windscreen sprayers.  Although considering the extent of the spray they've obviously got more lead in their pencils than an entire Premier League football team.

I am delighted to have some fresh gear oil too.  The Zed was warm when I collected it, but I am looking forward to a slightly less graunchy an arthritic change from first to second when cold the next time we go out from cold.

[And I did ask them about the delamination, and I'll add what they said in your thread on it, Paul :) ]

I'm glad it made it through it the end.  I fear mine might have a failing gasket at the X section and I have a spare one in the workshop but I don't think I'll have time to fit it.  I might have to keep my fingers crossed.

Again, thanks, and fingers crossed.  I always get paranoid coming up to MOT time too, thinking what about this, that or the other and should I 'fess up beforehand and show I'm on it or not.  There's a lot to be said for fingers crossed, and it'll be alright in the end.

Looking under the bonnet tonight, the coolant level looked a bit low.  It was right on the minimum mark, and the engine was nowhere near stone cold - it had been switched off for about three hours.  I'll have another look tomorrow, but I'm beginning to wish I'd bought a top-up bottle of that at the same I bought the power steering fluid earlier in the year.  Unless I can get away with a small drop of distilled water.

Late yesterday, and finishing off this morning, I applied the last monthly coat of wax to the Zed for this year.

This afternoon, I'm seeing how much difference the change of gearbox oil has made, and it's good news; the shifts are a little better, particularly from cold, although you can now feel how much the 'box hates to be rushed. Oh, and with the exhaust's patch-up it's quieter, so you can hear the brakes groaning a bit at low speed.

All is otherwise good though, as I got random waves from a woman in a Focus and another in a Corsa. :D

I've booked mine in to have the wheels refinished (yes, again!) and am discussing exactly what paintwork I want done when they do the bonnet.....

Gotta be ready for 2019!

I feel my gearbox oil change did the same for me.  I put some Molyslip in mine at the same time too.

The only real difference seems to be I didn't get any waves from random ladies.

How many times have the wheels been done now John?  If they keep skimming them they'll be much lighter now

Are you considering getting the front wrapped once the bonnet, etc. is done?

Yes, I accidentally leave my hazard lights on sometimes, too.

In fairness I need reminding where the hazards' button is. I did wonder if I'd left a dust cover on it and it was waving like a flag from the boot, but no . . .

My Zed had a really good day of mixed driving today - speed at times, high engine speed at times, corners of all speeds, roundabouts, and leisurely cruises in slow-moving traffic (behind new-ish Vauxhall Viva's that seem to terrify their drivers on a virtually dead straight single-carriageway A-road, and every flaming (alas not literally) tractor in Yorkshire) - so I treated it to a bit more Tesco Momentum.

It is running very well after its recent service - thankfully.  Water temperature stayed below halfway.  The exhaust is a bit too quiet, and should be changed next year.  The gearbox still needs a lot of heat before it's really happy to be rushed.  The driver of a new-ish MX-5 tried to get cheeky with me on a slip road, and the Zed had only been running for two or three minutes so I didn't want to cane it.  However, the gearbox played ball and I managed to get into sixth swiftly enough, and even at relatively low engine speed the Mazda then struggled to keep up.

Back home, it then got a decent quick detailing, but the glass and wheels could do with a bit of attention still - and refinishing is sounding more and more tempting for the wheels. :teeth:

Wheel re-finish will be the third. Hopefully the new company I've found will get he finish right this time (I'm lending them one done correctly for them to aim for).

Hadnt thought of a wrap for the bonnet but now you mention it.... At present I'm still discussing whether existing bonnet aluminium corrosion is to far gone to remedially treated, and then what areas to be re-painted (there is the ongoing problem of colour matching, not only with whats on the car, but also whats on my spare panels).

Gave the wheels a clean yesterday, and the windscreen another clean today - mainly on account of the fact that on Saturday afternoon a big fly managed to flatten itself right in front of me before I could even elicit a wave from a lady in a Focus.

I've also given a number of my microfibre cloths and towels as well as the odd applicator a wash, hopefully in advance of a quieter Winter. I also washed the pad I (mainly) use for quick detailing the Zed's wheels in a bucket, and never have I seen blacker water in a bucket, even though I give it a good rinse after every use. :o
