I just popped out to check the camera in the dark and the Sony CMOS 1000 times better in low light than my old one. Previously I could only really see illuminated or reflective things.

Very pleased! :)

I need to get one of these. If the brunch is a proper mod day, it might be the ideal time to install one of these :)

I'll put my shopping list together.

I have another quick look today. It seems to be installed OK. I did put a little rubber spacer in between the camera and the reverse light aperture to point it down a little which has made it better. You can still see the bodywork slightly but this new camera has a bigger field of vision which has to be a good thing :)

If you have the non Premium Connect car then you'll need the Navtool I used in this thread.

However, if you have Premium Connect then see here for details on fitting a camera :)

I just spotted a Navtool-style device for non Premium Connect cars on ebay :)

Here might be an alternative to the NavTool for 09 cars.

I would double check if it's OK for the non-Connect cars because the ad is misleading.  I think it will only work for the 09 models and not Connect but definitely ask the question!

it looks like it's a clone of the NavTool and appears to do the same job.  I can't vouch for it as I've never seen one but it might be worth a punt.

It could be a NavTool style device for the Connect cars guess.

It will not work for both navs

If it only works with non-Connect cars then one thing I can say for sure is that you will need to modify the wiring to work with UK cars as I described here.

I've swapped multiple messages with the seller on this one.  I can't seem to convince them that the device will not work with both '09 and Connect cars.  When we agree on what it actually does and what cars it works on I will let you know!

OK, some progress today.  As I thought, I can confirm that the device only works on '09 cars (i.e. not Premium Connect) and so is a slightly cheaper replacement for the NavTool :)

They seem to think Nissan chopped and changed nav units so you can't be 100% sure which one you have but we know different ;)

Just a heads up that the navtool is on half price until tomorrow. I assume now they are both $200 the navtool would be better since it's tried and tested?

Yep, I would go for the Navtool in that case

Good news!

You will need a NTSC camera with guide lines (and a flipped image of course).  Sorry I can't supply you a camera because the ones in my 370Z reverse camera kit don't have lines as the Connect Premium adds them.

Something like these on ebay (choose model 803).

As far as the wiring mod is concerned, the 'Y' cable they supply work on the US cars but not UK ones.  There is a wiring diagram in the paid Members area.  If you like you could send me the 'Y' cable they supply to modify it but to be honest it would be cheaper for you to join and do it yourself!

Let us know when it arrives! :)

Thanks Paul. Your always very helpful!
With regards to camera I remember you saying something about quality of the camera and how you found a Sony one to be clearer? Tbh I think I would prefer a pin sharp image as good in low level lighting instead of guide lines.

Lastly do you know how much it is to join the forum as a paid member and is it a DIY job or do I ekes to get anything else? Like is it just cutting and splitting some wires?

Thanks again :)

Sorry one more thing,
Since you don't have a connect premium what camera have you got? I don't mind sacrificing the lines if it means a better quality camera. In that case if the camera in you package is best quality maybe I could get that?

Mine is labelled Sony but coming from China there is no guarantee that it's genuine!  It works fine though.

For better visibility in low light choose a CMOS one.  The one I linked to before is CMOS but do remember to tell them you want an NTSC camera or it won't work.  The ones I have (which I am still waiting to arrive!!!!) and are the same spec but without the lines.  I prefer lines on mine because, although they don't move with the steering wheel and aren't adjustable, they are still useful as a reference.

Modifying the loom is a case of either cutting and soldering some wires or if you are lucky you might be able to unpick the pins from the plug or socket.  The latter is quite tricky to do but makes a neater job.  I'm not sure where you are based but if you want to meet up at a future Mod Day then I can do it for you there and help install it too.

See here about becoming a paid member :)

fab

I'm based in glasgow so unlikely i will make any events in england.

I just done a check on CMOS vs CCD and seems like CCD is superior especially in low level? any chance the original ccd you bought was maybe a poor quality one?

have you got the link of the ccd one you got before and the sony one after? some of the older ebay links have now expired :(

Just reading up on all this.  Id love to fit a reverse camera in my 2009 Zed.  From what I can tell I need the Navtool and then a camera that meets the specs Paul laid out.  Can anyone tell me if this will work instead of the Navtool ($179 is way more appealing than $400)

http://www.ebay.com/...=item3a94491383

Thanks very much.

That should do the trick :)

Note that the loom they supply will need modifying for your UK car as they were different from the US cars in 2009.
