Alex, I had exactly the same issue on a 65 beetle I restored at 15, complete new heater channels was my choice, major work but now too expensive (well when I was 15 at least) did have the advantage of doing the work myself though

Spent a few hours in the garage this week and still involved heavily in the strip down to bare parts.

Now that all the interior and removable panels are off the car I have begun some of the more delicate work! Removed some of the glass (again I'm having to do this in an odd way because of the small nature of my garage so everything has to be done in stages then moving the car over to complete work on the opposite side.) So passenger side and front windscreen first, and it appears the seals are in great condition so I'm attempting the very careful removal of seals without the use of a knife! Both bits of glass out with no damage to the seals but very time consuming!

Then before moving the car over I have removed the fuel tank and begun work on dismantling the wiring harness and removing the delicate instruments.

I am looking to get the rest of the wiring removed and the other two bits of glass out on Sunday. I've still not ordered any new parts yet so may go on a bit of a spending spree online tomorrow! :)

Thanks for reading
Alex

Good work mate. I know what you mean about working in a small garage as my Dad rebuilt his Riley (there was a tree growing in it!) in a single garage and it really slows you down.

You're not wrong Paul. I'm a bit of an impatient person so keep having to remind myself I've got lots of time to do this project and not to worry that progress is slow!

Well £500 later and C&C along with vwheritage are sending me lots of lovely new parts! All ordered yesterday so hopefully be with me before next weekend. Mostly replacement panels which will go someway to clearing most of the rusted through areas... so heater channels, bottoms of rear quarter panels, rear bumper mounting plates, bottoms of the A pillars and spare wheel well.

Spent much of the day today completely removing all wiring and the rest of the interior trinkets... interior light, door switches, vents, chrome trim, gauges and dash switches. I've also taken out the last two pieces of glass. Unfortunately the seal on the rear screen was completely shot and has also exposed a couple more spots of corrosion. The car is looking very bare now and I really feel like I'm getting somewhere! :)

Alex

Wow £500! That actually sounds quite reasonable for what looks like a healthy list of panels and parts. Looks well stripped down now Alex.
