Having a nightmare with BT. This has been going on for about 7 months now. We are contracted (which they keep offering to allow us to break) for a years worth of internet offering approx 7000kbps. We have been lucky to reach 3000, regularly hitting around 1000 mark. They have tried a lot of things to try and up our speed, new cable into house, new router, new cabling at the local switching centre, new this, new that. Any way after the last new cabling they said we should have a better speed and thought it should provide around 6000. However, unsurprisingly we are no where near that level. What bothers me now is that when running the BT speed test that I have to run on a regular basis I notice that theyappear to have capped us at 2000kbps...This is a copy of my last report tonight.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed
992 Kbps

0 Kbps 2000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 992 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

So, what are they up to?? Where it says - Max achievable - it previously said 7000, why is it now saying 2000? They are hidding from me at the moment so thought I would pick your brains. Thank you.

At the moment my download speed is zero. Virgin Media said I had too much noise on the line to they blocked me. I did offer to turn down the volume on YouTube but they didn't listen

BT have a new policy of, if the connection breaks regularly, they take the speed back to basic to see if they can stabilise it. Then they gradually increase the speed checking for stability - it can take a couple of days to get back to what the exchange thinks it can support.... I fell foul of this when I reset my router three times in an hour to try and resolve a wireless problem - suddenly found I was getting 512k download speed and it took several days before they balanced it back to 2mbps. They really are ..........

p.s. And sometimes when you have a support call they tell you to reset your router and, lo and behold, the auto balancing resets you to minimum again. Tossers.

p.s. And even you ISP (BT Internet or whomever) cant seem to get BT OpenReach to change this - they just get told to leave it for 48 hours. Mind you, 48 hours is immediate in BT terms. Multi-Tossers.

No an option for those who own houses I know, but I choose rental properties based on virgin media availability. I hat bt, open reach and sky equally.

I would give https://www.bethere....portal/homepage a go. When I was forced to go with bt they were much better on customer service. And offered a much higher speed, and achieved it, than bt or sky were offering. At the time in my area they were offering adsl2 were the others were still on adsl. They use the same open reach line though, so if that is the only problem, it might not help. But I like to give as little money as possible to bt, so worth it for me.

Have a read of this:

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/gui...d_distance.aspx

It all depends on the distance you are from the exchange. They can quote what ever speeds they like but this is the deciding factor if it's ADSL.

I'm about 2Km as the crow flies (1.25 miles in old money) and I get about 500Kbps upload and 5.6Mbps download.

If you do a google search for your area I'm sure you could work out what exchange serves you.

We are about 2 miles (as the crow flies) from the exchange. Rusbbish isn't it, There are loads of people who are a lot further away, without problems.

Garbage, I'm with Orange broadband and Talk Talk line rental and had no problems, ditched BT years ago.

Maybe try a different provider? A pain I know, but if it isn't working now anyway then it doesn't sound like you've much to lose.

Hope it's sorted for you soon, I'd be lost without my tinternet/gaming.

I ditched BT for Virginmedia, same telephone line went from 4.3Mb to 10.1 Mb ! connection is much more stable and virginmedia's support is more friendly and efficient.

I think a lot of that depends on what time you telephone them. If you 'phone 9 - 5, you usually seem to get a fairly reasonable amount of help. If, however, you 'phone later, you get the chocolate fireguard section instead.

I think the issues I had with Virgin Media earlier this year were largely caused by the fact I phoned early evening. Whereas I have a mate who's had a few problems, and he always 'phones from his work 'phone and seems to have unblemished success.

I must admit that I had a cable connection with Virgin for several years up until I moved earlier this year, and you could count the number of occasions I failed to get a connection on one hand.

So the above is full speed from a 50Mb Virgin Media cable service. I upgrade to 100Mb and now I get this:
