As title suggests!

Left the 370 at my parents' house and went out for dinner, came back and car won't start.
No turning over, the intelligent key light was on. My Mum took my wife home and she returned with spare key but no luck with this.

I have been reading around and it seems the steering lock may be the problem but I guess I won't know for sure until it's at Nissan. It's annoying timing as I'm back at work tomorrow. It appears the Nissan breakdown cover is only included for a year but at least I have my own cover

Has anyone else in the UK had this problem? From browsing the following thread it appears that the only reported cases are 2009 models; mine is 2010.

Thanks

Pedro

How unusual :(

Don't want to insult your intelligence, you plugged the key into the iKey slot?

Yeah tried that with no luck. Out of interest is this something that we should be doing routinely? I have just had the key in my pocket; I always kept my Renault key card in my wallet.

When I had the Z, I never had the logo come up and I was informed by the dealer that they replace the batteries during the service.

Hope you get it sorted ASAP

Sorry to hear about your problem. There is no need to insert the iKey in the slot unless the battery is low.

The only thing I could suggest is to try locking/unlocking the car a few times.

I am going to guess the dealer will do a software reset which will fix it.

Very bizarre, i would of said a charge issue, but if it's in the slot and still won't work.... :(

Paul's suggestions sound good so far, perhaps use the key to unlock if it's an option?

Let us know how you get on.

There have been a lot of problems with non starting GTRs in the US on the early models.
This was down to the steering lock module and resulted in a service bulletin. (see below)
US models were sold from July 2008. I don't believe any problems have been reported on UK GTRs since the April 2009 introduction.

Sorry to hear about your car. I'm sure breakdown cover is ongoing if you get your car serviced by a Nissan dealer?

I phoned Nissan this morning who told me I need to get my RAC to have a look and tow if necessary. I have a gut feeling that it's the steering lock module/solenoid from the reading I have done. I can't decide whether to wait until Fri when I'm off To get it looked at but then will probably be without the car until well into next week or I could get a tow tonight and maybe get it sorted before the weekend but that would mean abandoning it at Nissan tonight.

The steering lock part number on the failed 370Zs is 48700-JF00B
The new part number for GTRs from the bulletin is 48700-JF00C.

The revised part number for 370Z is 48700-JF00D:

http://www.nissanpar...8700-jf00b.html

I think it is reasonable to assume the 370Z and GTR use similar parts.

this is a picture of the solenoid, as you can see it is Part no. JFOOB-B1-01, the revised part is C or D to check it look directly under the steering column above pedals, mine is a revised JFOOC, so i think Pedro must have an early model.

Great info chaps

My car has only a year left on the warranty so I hope this happens soon (and that it's on the way to work, not the way home!!)

Thanks for all the info

I am being presumptuous here, but if it is the steering lock that needs replaced, is the replacement part a definitive fix - i.e. not prone to this problem?
It seems a bit crappy that the auto lock may be a time bomb, and that you have to hope it fails before the car is out of warranty.

Thanks

Nissan have said it was down to excess oil in the unit.
I think it is reasonable to assume they have sorted it now.

I notice there does not seem to be a service bulletin in the states for the 370Z despite using the same parts as the GTR.
Unacceptable IMO.

My warranty runs out in about 3 months but have only heard of JDM / US GTRs with this problem.

25 pages on NAGTROC about the problem on the GTR here:

Done a bit more research.

There are 2 switches in the steering lock unit.
If the same signal from both switches is not detected for 1 second then code B210A will come up which is for the Steering Lock.

I just tried the car again and same problem, interestingly the steering lock is not on, is this normal when the car is unlocked or another symptom of the problem
Cheers again

I know what you are saying about a time bomb. I suppose this is another benefit of a club like this in that, even if Nissan don't acknowledge it as a serious issue and release a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin), at least you are prepared should the worst occur. In the past my dealer has been flexible with 'know issues'.=

I knew someone who owned an early Audi TT and some had a problem with coil packs. Audi would do nothing proactive about the problem but would replace them F.O.C. if they failed (and they did on her car, in the middle of wales!) I guess this is a similar situation.

I just checked mine and it's a 'JF00B' version

Paul - thanks for the codes

The steering lock is activated by the ignition button, not the door locks. Therefore if the car is in Acc, etc. then the steering lock should be off.

I wonder what happens if you just pull the plug on the unit so it's not connected to the ECU? Maybe an error code reset too?
