As we all know, the present Government is currently researching the possibility of raising the current speed limit on motorways from 70 to 80mph.
If you came to power, what speed limit would you have on our motorways and why?
Paul.
New Speed Limits.

80mph normal day driving.
100mph after 11pm to 5am.
I would say delimited in some areas but uk drivers would end up dead as they do not have high speed driving skills like the germans! lol..

All current speed limits would become Advisory Maximum Speeds and Police would prosecute drivers for Careless, Reckless or Dangerous driving within the prevailing traffic, road and weather conditions, supported by evidence from existing monitoring cameras and their in-car equipment (these powers are already in place and I think the current Speeding offence is a subset of Careless Driving).
And as well as proescuting for overtaking on the nearside it would also be an offence to *be* overtaken on the nearside as it shows careless driving in the form of poor lane discipline.

I agree, I'd have 80 mph daytime and 100 mph between 11pm and 5am.
Not sure about unlimited? Reason's are, we don't have the quality of roads for high speed driving and we certainly don't have a high enough average standard of driver for high speed driving either!
Although before July 1968, motorways and all roads that are now National Speed Limit, were unlimited. The NSL sign used to mean No Speed Limit.
My father used to tell me about trying to "do the ton" on his Norton on one of our local A roads which was unrestricted in the 1960's, the road now has a 50 mph limit. Nothing has changed, it's still the same road. I guess that's progress for you?
