I've just had a play with my prototype for a reverse camera kit for those with a 2009 370Z which has the factory (not Connect Premium) Nav.

gallery_245_426_149198.jpg

Good news!  It works! :bounce:

The control box works just like the NavTool unit i.e. it gives you a reverse camera input which automatically switches when you put the car into reverse, as well as second composite video input that is manually switchable should you want to wire in a screen cam, forward facing camera, DVD, etc.

My solution has some advantages over the NavTool:

  • It's cheaper!
  • It doesn't require you to modify the NavTool loom to make it work on UK cars - I will have already done that for you
  • There is no need to pull the dash apart or run a wire down the centre tunnel because it all wires into the Nav in the boot

Just like my other kit it's 100% plug and play and fully reversible so you can return your car to standard.

I don't have a price yet as I need to work out the figures.  Unfortunately, it will be more expensive than the Connect Premium solution because I need to buy in the control box and there is a bit more wiring to do.  However, it will be cheaper than importing the NavTool, camera, etc. and without all the hassle associated.

I will get the first production kit made up early in the New Year so if anyone wants one then send me a PM.

If you have any questions then please ask away :)

OK folks, I have put up an official For Sale thread here.

Thanks mate :)

TBH, I've hated telling people with the earlier cars that they need to spend so much importing a NavTool from the States that then needs modifying, and a camera too.  It's so nice to be able to offer everyone a solution :)

Hi Paul, this sounds great as I really liked the 370 reversing camera but don't fancy adjusting the wiring on the navtool, so I would be definitely interested after seeing your instructions for fitting to see if I am capable of fitting myself.

Looking forward to see how this goes, thanks kev

Thanks Kev :)

Fitting it will be a doddle (all inside the boot):

  • Remove the floor mat
  • Remove the padding over the Nav (easier done if you choose to take out a wheel arch cover)
  • Remove a plug from the Nav and plug that into the loom
  • Plug the other end of the loom into the Nav
  • Remove the plastic cover at the rear of the boot
  • Swap a number plate light with the camera/light and plug into the loom
  • Put it all back together

Easily less that an hours work.  Sorted :D

I don't understand (senior moment?). Why do the early cars have the Nav in the boot? Isn't it difficult to see, especially with a cover over it?

Indeed it is!

Luckily Nissan run a wire up a screen in the front - so you don't have to ;)

So here is the working product:

gallery_245_426_170543.jpg

You can see the loom at the top left of the picture - that plugs in between the Nav unit and the car loom.  Then you just replace the number plate light with the camera (bottom left) and job done :)

Optionally, you can plug another video source into the box (see the spare yellow 'Video 1' composite socket) and use the toggle switch to override that source onto the Nav screen.

Welcome Todd! We're looking forward to you getting it too :) Where in the country are you?

I know the answers to some of your questions, but I won't be rude - I'll leave it to Paul to answer. Suffice to say, I think you'll have a happy Christmas :)

Hi Todd :welcometonissansportz:

A GT Ultimate huh?  Very rare!  Yes, your car will definitely take this mod.  Basically, if you have a UK 370Z with the Nav with no touchscreen (which you will) then it will work.

You have a PM :)

Please start up a new thread to introduce yourself and your car - I want to see pictures of that unique colour interior!

Hey all,

Im based in the NW near Chester.. short hop to the northwales twisties, so really looking forward to it! its 2009 13k and 1 previous, with all sevices etc. so im hoping it will be as sweet as it looks and seems so far!!

It is the non-touch screen Nav version, its already seeming soo much nicer than the Cayman S i just had to give back, with a shot engine!!

As soon as it is on the drive, i will get a few proud smiley pics posted!!

Thanks for the quick replies and thanks for the warm welcome!!

Awesome work Paul.  I'll be one of the first to snap this kit up from you.  I am really strugglng going from the Murano to the Zed.  I think Ive started to rely on the reverse camera a little too much.

It's a shame about the GT Ultimate.  A 2012 GT is brilliant though :bounce:

For the GT you'll need this kit :)

Hi Paul - were you able to finalise the kit and set a price?  Just wondering if I would be able to buy one from you and fit it at the mod day in February?

Bundus - I'd better double check that I can make the Mod day!

I'll order some parts, work out the figures and then post up an official advert.

Nice one Kev.  More details to follow soon :)

Edit: I will definitely be coming to the Mod day.  I have a commitment that evening so I can't stay late but the kits are quick to fit!
