Hey everyone.
Happy New Year :)

Thought I would come and say hello again. It's been a while but I am now a Z owner again! :)
I used to own a blue Veilside 350z which I had from stock and then was built by KnightRacer. I then loved the Z so much, I owned a black 370z GT Edition which I came to one of your meets at chillired house I believe? Lol
I then had to sell as priorities were to buy a house, well bought the house now, and I wanted another Zed! I am now a owner of a 1972 Datsun 240z. Have always wanted to own one but never really had the courage to buy an old car as my mechanic skills are very limited. But thought let's do it and I can learn through the build. It needs ALOT of work! Came in from the states 6/7 weeks ago...

I have already started work on it and all welding has been done. Saturday, it is going to a garage who is going to help me make sure the engine is running smoothly and get a MOT checklist :)

Welcome back.  I cannot wait to see what this project ends up like.  I wish I could - I definately would.  It will be a awsome car.    Do you know which State it spent its life in?

You lucky, lucky man. Well done for actually doing it - and not just thinking about doing it.

Has it come from a rust-free part of the USA? How did you buy & import it? Was it a good price? (cheeky question).

I'm guessing I know what your New Year's resolution will be.

Haha yeah I am sure you can guess my New Years Resolution!
It had a few little holes and the sill was pretty bad but it came from California which is good. In fact there was no damp in the car or in the sills which was good. I made a small hole bigger in one sill and just lots of Californian dust just piled out lol
A guy who imports American cars imported it in front southampton. Price was average to be honest. Nothing special with the price but I suppose it's good points were it actually drives when you can spend the same on something that doesn't but is more original and in better body condition. For me, it being able to run was a bonus as didn't expect to be able to pick up a running car.

California / Arizona is about as good as you can get as I undertsand it.  I didn't want to ask outright incase it came from Maine.  Do you have any plans for the final colour.

I heard that it's a good place for them to come from but I didn't know if the bad places so that's still good haha
Yeah I have been thinking on colours, as much as I love white and off whites, it has been done a few times so thinking something that hasn't been done as much. I still want to keep it a nice looking colour that would suit an old car rather than something "too modern" of you get what I mean lol
So been thinking Blue, possibly the Nissan Daytona Blue so it's like a deep royal blue. As you know, decisions change haha with all the ideas but something I have definitely wanted is to paint it a Nissan colour whether it's a new or old colour :)
We will see haha

Thinking maybe I should put a few project snaps on here on what's been done so far?

It would be great to follow it and also on Drive Tribe site if you are happy for me to link to anything you post on here?

I had Azure Blue on my 350z and loved it.  The Colour Jeff has on his 370z which is a storm blue (so sort of storm effect blue) but yes I could see that - it would be great.  I have always loved and had a few blue cars.  Personally I would change the colour from white If you have the option.

Are you planning to stay Carb or move to Fuel Injection?

Are you going to do a RHD conversion?  I seem to remember that it's not too hard except for finding a dash.

Yeah I may put some updates on the project together on here then. I don't mind you sharing but can I ask what is Drive Tribe? Sounds Interesting :)

Yeah I am a big fan of blue so am thinking a blue for sure. It's a awful rattle can White at present but the original colour is brown!

I do like the Daytona Blue, is that the same as the azure blue? It seems pretty similar?

For now, staying carbs and making sure she runs smoothly. If I were to change her to injection and start spending some serious £'s, I may choose to change the lump completely. Then it opens lots of doors! Haha and lots of £s!!! Lol

So when I bought the 240z, this is how she looked about 6 weeks ago. It's a 1972 Datsun 240z imported from California.

So week 1:

The old Radiator was leaking as had been caught underneath when unloading from the container so a new rad was needed. I decided to upgrade at the same time and went for a Mishimoto Radiator and installed this:

97B06776-1883-4B89-87EF-F7FCBB09E7CE.jpg

Also, I found some coolant in the passenger footwell which was very suspicious then mopped it up and found some more a few days later. I then realised it come was coming from the Heater so this was the next job to remove it. The Rust on car isn't too bad but there are some spots and also needed to check for anymore so I removed the seats at the same time and cleaned the floor pans to check:

869BC833-8A91-429E-BBBF-761BE5C8D38D.jpg

Found a few rust spots which need sorting so I undertook a rust treatment on the floor pans using Fertan which neutralises the rust. This is then ready for the welder to come out to work his magic and get the shell solid again:

0682201D-6D37-4409-8C00-DDB4447D38A1.jpg

Welder has been out and so far sorted the hole in the wheel well in the boot which wasn't rust and also a hole in the front arch in the engine bay which also wasn't rust. It actually looked like a gunshot hole! Haha

191974AB-B092-4723-81C8-20C24DD85B16.jpg

Welder is taking the car this weekend to sort the floor pan holes and also the Holes on either sill (one which you can see is bad! )

Week 2:

So remember I haven't got a clue about cars! So I am learning as I go! Lol
I looked at the carbs and researched them. I found that these Z's came stock with Hitachi SU side draft carbs and looking at mine they definitely weren't stock. I found out that the car had dual Weber DGV's fitted and when pushing the fuel injectors at the bank of them, they were leaking so needed to order a rebuild kit for the carbs:

F8EE32F3-0574-4606-84E3-C1966AC73272.jpg

Whilst looking at the car, I knew it had a brake leak too so I thought I would take a look to see if I can find it!
E17BF91C-27E0-45F7-AF3A-982A85FA09C5.jpg

1B525E0D-2BE8-4DD5-9282-CCE48AF5F021.jpg

I discovered there was brake fluid up in the drivers footwell where the brake pedal is. From this I am thinking the master cylinder has leaked and it's managed to get into the brake booster and come through meaning I probably need a new brake booster and master cylinder. To change both these bits, it would be a lot easier if the carbs are off the car so I am waiting on the brake parts to arrive to then remove the carbs and rebuild them and also fit the new brake parts at the same time :)

Ok here's an update :)
I ordered a new Master Cylinder and Brake Servo from the Z car Depot in the states but in the meantime the car went off to the welder to be worked on. The welder had for 2 weeks as found a few more little holes to sort out. It came back 10 days ago with the repairs all done...

http://i829.photobuc...5F85C2F6532.jpg

So when the Z came back last week, over the last few days I got cracking with ensuring she is completely undersealed. When underneath, I found the car in pretty good condition and most of the original underseal was still very dry and solid. I made sure I wire brushed any loose rubbish off under there and made sure it was all dry then got to work and have completely undersealed the car and inside the wheel tubs.

http://i829.photobuc...AD0E11075B4.jpg

I wanted to add that extra protection from our crappy weather in the UK if I did happen to be caught in it!
And yeah I got pretty covered with underseal!

Note to self: where gloves next time!!! (It is a b**** to get off!) lol

And my Brake Servo & master cylinder turned up :)

So next jobs to do:

Fit Brake Booster & Master Cylinder
Remove and rebuild carbs as they are leaking!

I checked our Z club.net but for some reason I can't get registered on there as I am waiting for someone to authorise me and don't know who to contact. This was about a month ago so I kinda gave up and also the site didn't seem to work on my iPhone device which is a pain. It may be me doing something wrong!? Lol

I haven't planned on doing the RHD conversion. The Dash alone is £1500 but I spoke to a really respected restorer and they said it costs a lot as other bits need doing too :/ . I have driven it down a private road and it seems ok but I think I will just wait and see how it goes haha LHD.

I have do limited knowledge about working on cars so it really is a project for me to learn! Lol
Thanks

Haha I am indeed Paul! However I bought a decent cover for the car and it is always bone dry when taking the cover off. Certain things will obviously be done in different places. For example, I have asked a local garage to help teach me but do some work on the car with me. I don't want to break anything serious! Lol so some expertise is always helpful.

Haha I have applied for a garage from the local council so hopefully they give me one soon :) just makes things so easier :) also will keep the car nice and dry!

But determined to get this done. It wasn't best fun undersealing the whole car last week. A tad chilly!
