Its not run for 10 years but it's not seized. It needs putting back together and a little bodywork done, but basically it's very good.

The car was born in 1971 and is from the US (a nice dry state). A previous owner had an extremely good RHD conversion done 15 years ago.

I can't wait to get it home and start work on it. But I do need to completely empty the garage first and put all the stuff in my new workshop before that happens.

So, until Nissan make a replacement I own the first and most current Z car :)

Haha! Well done Paul! Look forward to seeing it in the flesh one day. Same colour as the one I had in my £100k garage?

Could be mate! It was resprayed when it was converted and I'm not 100% sure it's a Datsun colour but it does closely match the original paint in the boot area.

Here's how it looked 10 years ago (on different wheels).

Minilite wheels were very popular in the 70s when I used to rally against 240s. Well done mate.. BUT, I am sooooooooooooooo jealous!

These are the wheels on it at the moment. I'm not sure about them but they will do for the time being.

Unlike the 370Z you can pick up a good set of wheels for under £500

Can you tell us the story of how you acquired it?

Well, you did ask.....

Well, I've hankered over a 240Z for a long, long time.  As soon as I got my 350Z and looked back at the Z heritage I've wanted one.  I've been a paid up member of ZClub for more than 10 years even though I didn't have anything to contribute

Over the years 240Z's kept crossing my path (not just at meets, but with the Japanese Performance Mag shoot, and Car SOS) and that didn't help quash my desire for one!

I think the final straw was when _BR1TT0N_ got his 240Z and I suddenly thought, "why the heck don't I just bit the bullet and get one?"  The obvious answer was that I needed agreement from the boss and Sarah did put up some resistance at first but when she realised just how much I wanted one I was given clearance.  Part of the deal was that we get all the bathrooms replaced.  It was a small price to pay (well, no financially, but you know what I mean!)

So the hunt was on from from around mid January and I left no stone unturned.  I checked all the obvious places as well as signing up to a Z club in Australia (I was close to importing one from there) and keeping an eye on auctions in Japan.  We really wanted a RHD car and that is quite a big ask.  There are loads of LHD ones to choose from but I didn't fancy my chances getting all the parts required to convert one to RHD as they are getting rarer by the day.

Getting a car from the States was an obvious choice because there are some really good examples out there with tidy bodywork (as you might expect rust is the main killer for UK cars).  But a downside of getting a US car is that the dry and heat that keeps the body in good condition also ages the interior and they are often very tatty on the inside.  Also, the lack of an MOT in the US means the car can be unroadworthy and need a lot of attention.

Anyway, someone posted up on Zclub that they were thinking of selling their RHD 240Z and I jumped at it.  It's a sad tale in that this car was going to be his keeper but circumstances changed and he realised that he was never going to make use of it.  He's owned 21 Z cars over the years and this one has been blessed with all the best bits from those being swapped into it during its life with him.  I have to say that the excitement of buying the car is tinged with sadness because he really didn't want to see it go.  He knows he'll never own another Z car again.  However, he knows it has gone to a good home and part of the reason he sold to me was that he wanted it to be looked after and not just kept as a garage queen or sold on for a quick profit.

Onto the car itself, As I said I was imported from the US 15 years ago and was converted to RHD at the time.  It's a really good conversion with no corners cut - very tidy bulkhead, UK rear lights, windscreen wipers corrected, a 5 speed 'box (the US cars were 4 speed), rear diff changed to suit, the soft US spec suspension has been replaced with adjustable coilovers, anti-roll bars fitted (again, the US ones lack one of these), etc.

The bodywork on the whole is excellent (it looks better underneath than my 370Z!) but there are a couple of areas that need urgent attention.  Nothing that would fail an MOT, but the longer the rust is there the further it will spread.  The wheel arches are amazing.  Just like new :)

The interior is really good too.  The previous owner swapped out the dash for an excellent one (they are very prone to cracking) and the seats have been re-upholstered.  The door cards are great and the boot lining has all been replaced.  I have been told all the gauges work but time will tell.

Mechanically it's had a lot of work done too - the DJR decals are there because Dave Jarman Racing has had a play with it.  It's been bored out to 2.6 (normally 2.4) and the head has been worked on.  It has triple Dellorto carbs and a stainless steel exhaust (and manifold).  The front brakes are uprated too.  In a way I would rather the engine was more standard as I'm not planning on tracking it or driving it particularly hard, but since the car isn't standard anyway the engine being modified doesn't detract from the car.  I must say I'm really looking forward to hearing it for the first time!!!

So the plan is to get it home, bolt it all back together (the boot is full of bits!) and get it through the MOT.  Once that's done I'll get the bodywork sorted and make it all the same colour again.

Long term, it could do with a respray but it looks fine until you get up close.  The paint does let the rest of the car down (because it's so good), but I might leave it a couple of years and see how I feel then.  If any new rust appears in that time then I might consider getting it stripped down to bare metal and getting a full respray.

That explains why the lush tree is looking particularly bare at the moment - that is absolutely gorgeous.  B)

It's great to hear you're starting with it in such a good state too.  Thank heavens for dry States, eh.  I hope you're able to keep it something like that at least for a long time to come.

Women are never slow to spot the opportunity for a bit of a diy deal, are they?

As for the car, wow! You've scratched the itch that many of us have - well done!

Will it have an MOT in time for the 7th May?

To be fair I still think I got a good deal!  The biggest problem is the garage is absolutely full of bathroom stuff at the moment and I literally can't walk into it - not best for getting it cleared for the car.

I've just had a 18 x 8 foot workshop put up so I plan to empty the garage into that (and throw out a whole load of stuff I've accumulated the last 10 years).

Unfortunately the 240Z won't be coming to Leeds Castle because I don't think I'll have got it home much before then.

However, if anyone wants to come over and see it after the meet then feel free (I only live half an hour away).  That said, there will be a 240Z and 260Z at the show.

I've uploaded a few pics.  Here's the good (underside):

Isn't it amazing how a garage can magically clear itself to make way for a bit of tinkering with the car? Did you take an expert with you to look at the car, or did you rely on your own judgment*?

That looks like a lot of fun to play with.  Lots of little bits to tinker with, and aren't older cars a lot more inviting to look at and play with underneath and under the bonnet, as they're a lot less complicated - not as many wires and a bit more room to turn a spanner.

now that is a car..

if I had the money I think I would be tempted to do a full body work resto now. Why wait for the inevitable and feel bad in two years time. will give you more room in the garage while shell  is away at bodyshop and |I think the original orange colour is the DB's (I will concede the old Nissan yellow would look good too)

Obviously the engine has been modified a wee bit !! cough cough !! but I get the feeling you want the car as an originalrestoration

DO IT DO IT DO IT

Part of the reason I say this is because I had a crush on a teacher at school and she had one !!!

not I would just have the car !!!!!
