...I'm confident it will be legally roadworthy in a couple of weeks time :)

Not wishing to tempt fate, I won't say what I think that implies.

Fantastic job to only fail on a door link.
I remember thinking how quick it felt and how impressive the handling felt
Are you considering a track day in it!?

I've had the good fortune to source one from the UK so it's all good :)

I thought I might have to get one from the US and was worried it wouldn't arrive in time.

I have been away so I've not an opportunity to do anything to the car other than think up new jobs to do!

However, when I got back today I spent all of 15 minutes changing all 6 spark plugs.  Simple as peas!

Unfortunately I didn't manage to source a new rod in the UK so I ordered some threaded rod to make up a replacement.

After a bit of filing and bending I came up with this (the rods are ever sided after all so they do not look identical):

gallery_245_510_252584.jpg

With my first attempt the end snapped off (you can see it to the right) and I was a bit concerned that it might be a weak point.  For the second attempt I heated up the rod on the gas ring and it bent a little better.  I then made up a plastic piece for the end and it looked like this:

gallery_245_510_4133.jpg

I was pretty pleased with that so I went to fit it.  Whilst wiggling it into place I found something caught up in the window mechanism.  It was the missing rod!

As you can see it was a little bent out of shape:

gallery_245_510_28439.jpg

But I soon got it looking as it should:

gallery_245_510_128225.jpg

It's annoying that I didn't find it before (I thought I'd checked inside the door thoroughly!) but in the end I'm pleased that I have the correct part in place.

So now both door handles work as Datsun intended :)

I also took the chance of a break in the weather to drive the car outside and do an engine oil change.  The replacement filter is HUGE!

This spare filter came with the car and I love the fact it's got Japanese writing on it :)

It didn't take long to do the change so that's another job ticked off the list.

As you may have read, the car passed it's MOT today :#1:

gallery_245_510_418969.jpg

It wasn't all plain sailing today though.  I was confident the car would pass because it only failed on the door handle and that is fixed.  However, on the way to the testing station I noticed a small wisp of smoke coming from the steering column.  I pulled over, checked everything (I don't have the cosmetic surround on it yet) and nothing was hot so I got on my way and all seemed well again.

When the tester checked the car over he noticed the left hand indicators weren't working so the car would fail.  The hazard lights were OK then.  So after a little head scratching I realised that the indicator switch was playing up.  I asked if they had any WD40 and they lent me a can.  A quick squirt later and all was well.

I'll add stripping down the column switches and giving them a good clean to the list!

I've got to give full credit to Sarah for her understanding and letting me use up all my time on it.

Today I went out for a drive.  It's the first time I've actually gone out to test it out.  it's my furthest journey yet, albeit just 16.5 miles

I've got to admit it's not the nicest thing to drive at the moment - a mixture of the tracking being so far out, the wheels not being properly balanced, and the suspension not being set up (ride height and damper settings).  Also, I've just realised that I've not checked the tyre pressures.  Something tells me that they're massively over-inflated at the moment.

However, I still enjoyed myself :teeth:  I did a mixture of local roads and a bit of dual carriage way.  I even stopped off for some fuel - several people came up to chat!

The speedo reads a little low (I might be careful about that), but that may change if I opt for some different wheels & tyres.

I had planned to change the gearbox oil when I got back, until I realised that I didn't buy enough

Just a small thing today - I found the reason the idle speed is sometimes too high is due to the fact the throttle linkage doesn't always return to the fully closed position.  The linkage is free and there is a little slack in the adjustment to allow it to happen so perhaps the springs on the carbs aren't quite up to the job.

A lot of other cars have an additional spring to help close the throttle so I decided to add one.  The only thing is, I didn't have a clue what spring to use - or even to measure the spring rate required.  So I took the 'infinite monkeys' approach and bought a set of random springs to try.

I fitted a test one today and I seems to do the job.  I won't know for sure until I've done a few miles...

Arriving late to this party but just wanted to say what an excellent blog of your progress.  I've enjoyed the read over a few lunch breaks!  :D

Whilst you say that a year has passed since you bought it and it should have been finished sooner, I think from what I've read, you've done a fantastic job getting to this point in only a year!  I have a lot of (mostly DIY) jobs to do and they always take longer than you think and before you know it, the months rattle by!

Anyway, deviating a bit...great car with a lot of attention to detail that it needed.  I love the fact that you've sorted the mechanical bits first and can then sort any cosmetics bits you wish to while you enjoy driving her (well, not literally, but you know what I mean!).

Thanks mate :)

I went out for a little spin earlier and the spring definitely improved things.

Also, I adjusted the suspension.  The coilovers have settings 1-5.  Three of them were on 1 and one was on 2.  They are now all on 3 and it's a lot less bone-shaking!

So the 240Z has been out and about this weekend :)

We took it to Motors By The Moat both Saturday and Sunday.  It got properly rained on for the first time in about 12 years!

gallery_245_526_387766.jpg

gallery_245_526_5338794.jpg

Luckily the Sunday was a lovely dry (and eventually very sunny) day so the Z was 100% dry when I put in the garage tonight.

So after this weekend's fun I've now driven an whole 93.9 miles in the 240Z!
