MORE PODIUM SUCCESS FOR SANCHEZ IN PIRELLI WORLD CHALLENGE
Utah Motorsports Campus, Salt Lake City, UT, USA – Former GT Academy winner Ricardo Sanchez has charged to another podium result in Pirelli World Challenge SprintX competition, scoring a second-placed finish with Frankie Montecalvo yesterday.
Montecalvo scored the Pro/Am class pole on Saturday but the first race for the duo was ruined by a puncture.
Sanchez made amends on Sunday. After starting 18th, the Mexican earned the award for the best start of the race, moving into the top ten within two laps.
He handed over to Montecalvo at half race distance and the American drove the Always Evolving / AIM Autosport Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 across the finish line in third place.
However, a penalty applied to the class winner elevated Sanchez and Montecalvo to second.
"We were very unlucky with the flat tyre on Saturday after having started on pole," Sanchez said.
"We had to recover a lot of positions on Sunday, starting 18th overall and eighth in class. We spent a lot of time discussing the strategy and the plan was certainly to be aggressive on the start.
"I went inside first, then outside and managed to grab eight positions in the first two laps to move into the top 10 and fourth in the Pro/Am class.
"We ended up P2 at the end because the class winner had to serve a drive-through penalty. It was a really good day. We were a little unlucky with the safety car as well. We were right behind the eventual class winner so we came very close to getting the win."
The final round of the Pirelli World Challenge SprintX Championship will be held at Circuit of The Americas on September 1-3.
RZADZINSKI & COUPAL TAKE MICRA WINS AT GRAND PRIX DE TROIS-RIVIÈRES
Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, QC, Canada – The Nissan Micra Cup stars did battle at the oldest street race in North America last weekend with Stefan Rzadzinski and Xavier Coupal taking wins at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières.
Micra Cup was part of the race weekend action for the 50th anniversary at the famous Quebec street circuit.
Olivier Bédard earned both pole positions, but neither resulted in victory for the 2015 champion. On Saturday, Rzadzinski took the win, one second ahead of Bédard. The podium was completed by Kevin King – championship leader heading into this event.
In the second race, Coupal overtook Bédard and carried that through to victory. Having passed Rzadzinski, Valérie Limoges completed a three-for-three for the Total Team as she earned another Nissan Micra Cup podium.
Previous championship leader Kevin King was forced to retire after two incidents on Sunday with Olivier Bédard now taking over the series lead.
The Nissan Micra Cup will now head to Canadian tire Motorsport Park on September 1-3.
SUPERCARS SET FOR SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK
Sydney Motorsports Park, Sydney, NSW, Australia – Nissan Motorsports has its sights set on repeating its speed from the pre-season Supercars test when the championship returns this weekend to Sydney Motorsport Park.
Rick Kelly set the pace at the pre-season tyre test in Sydney in February. The teams return this weekend for a 31 lap battle on Saturday and a 52 lap event on Sunday. Kelly earned a top ten finish last year in Saturday's race, while his brother Todd and Michael Caruso earned top tens on Sunday.
"We’ve made some good progress over the recent rounds and Sydney Motorsport Park is the last opportunity to prepare for the endurances races at Sandown, Bathurst and Gold Coast," Caruso said.
"So the event has added importance. We all know the track really well and since the upgrades a few years ago it’s become a really fun place to drive.
"My team mate set the fastest time in pre-season testing at SMP, so hopefully that’ll prove to be a positive sign."
