That looks like a lot of fun :teeth:

If course, if you parked it in the snow you'd never find it again

As Paul_S and I conclusively proved in April 2015 at Milbrook, controlling the car in those conditions needs a lot of skill. We found that we were somewhat deficient in that respect, and the surface we were using was nowhere near as slippy as snow/ice. My memories of that day involve the steering wheel being repeatedly ripped from my grip, and the scenery doing 180 degree turns. I’m not going to give up the day job.

As I recall, Paul, it was the drifting course with CAT at Milbrook and it took a qualified race driver to show us how to drift the Zed (with the stab system off, of course). I’m not too sure what I learnt from that short interlude of humiliation, other than that race drivers can drive better than I can, which was surely a given.

Contrary to other, rather more adventurous, posts made on this forum I am not a believer in turning the stab system off on the Zed. We witnessed (at very first hand) how quickly, and hard, the car will depart if you are too adventurous when the automatics are disabled. This post may naturally lead onto a completely new topic for discussion, but it seemed appropriate wrt the video LESmo posted.

It was indeed :)

I think one of the reasons I struggled is because I normally drive well within the car's limits and I found it really hard to judge when it was on the limit - as you could tell when I went over it and went round in some pretty circles.  You're right, when it goes you need to be very quick to catch it!

You have to remember that as with anything repetition is the key. Race drivers are pretty well always on the edge, and have the reactions to catch most slips, not all.

Also there is a very different feeling in going into a corner I tending to just drive round as apposed to drifting. If you intend to drift and you get it wrong you generally spin, but if the back steps out unexpected when your not prepared you have can easily over compensate and get the car snaking or even flip it.

As for disabling driving aids, I've seen those cause a car to spin as well as the driver can snatch the wheel and cause the car to spin the other way. It is just an aid after all.

Millbrook was great and if anything I learned just how hard it was to loose the back end intentionally but also that what works one day will not necessarily work another.

It must be about time we looked at booking another CAT session.

Jeff.

Fully agree Jeff. My car stepped out on me  couple of weeks ago on an island I am very familiar with and I used to have fun with in my 350Z. However the 370Z violently snapped and the traction control brought it back way before my brain had registered the slide!

Does anyone else notice that the 350 was much more forgiving?

I would think that this is because the 350z is longer than the 370z and ultimately has less grip so will reach the limit earlier and be easier to catch.

The 370z can pull nearly 1g on a continuous radius on some of the tests I`ve seen online so when it does go it will be travelling faster too.

Beware Zeds and black ice. Even 350's - when they go, they go . . .

After last week's snow, I've become an even bigger advocate of small, cheap FWD cars. I was out in the Yaris when a load of fresh snow fell a week last Thursday, and it was brilliant. Scandinavian flicks galore, and even a threshold braking refresher when a Citroen driver stopped and didn't restart in front of me for no apparent reason.

Today's the day, in many parts of the UK - I may test the SNOW mode on my autobox while the roads are clear, to see what it does.
