I keep revisiting Dash Cams - I have a lot of Halfrauds Vouchers and I think that's something I could add - but I tend to do most of my Journeys at 5am and 7pm so to be honest the traffic is light or have Cazza in the car.  I am worried a bit about battery drain.  I have a Bluetooth kit on the Civic Type R and that used to drain the battery - do they shut off or trickle - I know some monitor while the car is parked.

Mine shuts off when the ignition is off. Neither the battery versions, nor the capacitor versions drain the battery when the ignition is off, because power is cut to the 12v socket. Obviously if you hardwire it to record when the ignition is off, or if you buy one that has this as an option, it will drain the battery to some extent.

In my opinion, dashcams are God's gift. Just imagine a world without all those Russian crash videos on YouTube - doesn't bear thinking about.

I will look into all of the suggestions you have made.

The police do patrol this stretch of road but they can't be everywhere at once, or in our case when we have Mr road rage behind us.

We live just beyond the end of the 30mph speed limit.

Drivers appear to want to express their anger at this point because there are no more speed cameras from there on after a  slow 5-mile drive away from the city.

It is at that point that we need to slow down to turn right,

It would appear that drivers ignore our indicator, tailgate and lose any kind of sanity.

I attach a picture to understand the problem better.

Thanks  Chubbs that's good to know and I know what you mean about those YouTube clips.

Zeb - there is nothing you can do, you cannot make your car disappear - you have no middle pull into box thing, so you are going to block the lane until it is safe to cross, and they just have to "suck it up buttercup" I have to say when I see a Dashcam screen in the front screen of the car about I am acutely aware of it. I think they play a part in controlling traffic around them.

You probably do it already, but maybe signal very earlier just before you enter the National speed limit so the traffic behind doesn't start accelerating right up your behind. Sounds like some very impatient drivers about though.

I work in Toulouse occasionally and in the office someone was saying they needed a new door mirror. It turns out in rush hour and when the traffic is really heavy, if you stop your car in a traffic queue without automatically moving to the edge of your lane, motorcyclists trying to filter through will deliberately smack your door mirror off with their hand as they pass!

I have a unit which has two cameras, front and rear. The front is mounted behind the rear view mirror on the passenger side, and the rear is mounted inside the rear screen, top and cntre-ish (avoiding the in-built aerial and heating elements). The rear camera is connected to the front by a usb-type cable hidden in the headlining.

The front camera unit is also the control unit, with the memory card.

Its quite an old unit now, bought at CarFest South on our first attendance there (2012?) and is no longer available.

It records in two-minute chunks to MP4 files on a 32Gb memory card and when that is full it starts to overwrite the oldest. I have it set to always record when driving, and to record "incidents" when parked. Power is wired from a permanently on source, but through a switch so I can turn it off when at home. The control unit also monitors the voltage level and will turn completely off if the battery starts to run low.

It records both images into one file, but if you just playback the MP4 file you only see the front image. Some special software was supplied which with take the recorded file and separate it into front and rear MP4 files.

The "incident" recording is triggered by various motion sensors, such as someone walking close by or trying the door, etc. When moving the "incident" recording is triggered by heavy braking, swerving, or impact - so again by motion sensors.

Capacity of the memory card is about 4 hours, but larger memory cards can *not* be fitted (I usually carry a spare). The unit also comes with a GPS aerial but I don't have that connected.

Downsides:

1) The control unit wont work if the rear camera is not connected - so no front image capture in that case.

2) You have to take the memory card out of the unit to put the images on your PC. This is very fiddly with the unit in situ without disturbing the camera position.

3) Although you can program the settings on to the card from your PC, the software is difficult to use - the instructions and terminology seem to have lost a lot in translation to English. You can program the control unit in situ via its touchscreen but again its very fiddly in situ.

4) The "incident" recording, when triggered, captures the previous 60 seconds and then records until the trigger lapses, plus a little while. The unit then reverts to normal recording. This means that if you want to join together normal driving into a larger chunk than two minutes, you find there is an overlap between before incident, incident, and after incident records which is a PITA when editing (and of course all three might need splitting to separate front and rear files)...

All said, I wouldn't be without it. I might one day fit the GPS aerial and just unplug it when I don't want to record my journey location information.

I have been looking to replace it wit something that doesn't need the memory card to be taken in and out and can connect via Bluetooth to download image files. I'd also like something that records in larger chunks, and that doesn't have the overlap between recordings.

And I've no idea how it gets two videos on to one MP4 file. The separation (and viewing) software is far too complex.

I'm guessing there may be something that's improved on all this but it will probably be in a specialist range such those sold for use in company vehicles...

signal very earlier just before you enter the National speed limit so the traffic behind doesn't start accelerating right up your behind.

.

The problem is made worse by having two lanes, dual carriageway in places, all the way out from the city centre at a top speed of 30mph for 7 miles with many congested roundabouts, traffic lights, zebra crossings, traffic jams and speed cameras,  then suddenly the speed limit changes, there are no speed cameras and the two lanes go into just one, right outside our drive where the two lanes of impatient drivers start jostling to get in front of each other at a time when we are slowing down to turn right onto our drive. picture attached.

It might be worth a mention that the speed limit does not change to any more than 40 mph at that point.

We have tried a variety of signalling, we have found that if we signal further back it is treated as an involuntary and accidental signal and is ignored by most.

We have had hair-raising moments whereby motorbikes have overtaken as we were swinging in and some cars have even tried it and backed off at the last moment whilst shouting abuse at us.

We won't be able to solve this problem but we hope to be able to catch some of this on footage in the event something happens, hence our questions about dash and rear cams.

Just a mention that, it was not like this when we moved into this, our retirement home, almost 20 years ago.

I know this thread is over a year old but with summer holidays being planned I am currently looking at changing out the dash cam I inherited in my Z. It’s a Road-angel something or other but it’s not happy accepting an SD card at the moment.
Has anyone got any 2019 recommendations based on recent purchases or a great value older model that’s still doing a useful job?
Ideally I’d like one that can link to the iPhone or iPad to simplify downloading etc. Cheers

I'm still pleased with my Roadhawk (see here).  The only real problem I have with it is that it records in a series of short videos so if you want to upload a drive to YouTube (for example) it's a pain to stitch them back together again.

I think it's fine for recording in case of an incident, but if you want to use it instead of a GoPro (or alike) then I wouldn't buy one.  So that may be something you want to consider when you buy your new one.

Have a look at this https://www.youtube....h?v=y0lFPAwK4B8

I have the first version which is pretty good, this one looks to have a fair few improvements and the video quality looks spot on.

I notice Halfords have just started a series of 'flash sales'.  Today's one includes dash cams.

I don't know how those prices stack up against other retailers but it might be worth a look :)

I quite fancy the 522GW as an upgrade - with the polarised lens and the 1440p resolution - as I kept looking at the 512 previously. Halfords prices tend to be slightly better than Argos, if you want to get off the shelf immediately.

2007 350Z (my second Zed) - When you give up driving, you’re not going to look back wistfully on the car you owned with the nicest dashboard top or speaker grilles. You’re going to remember a car for its excitement and how it made you feel.
2011 Yaris 1.33 (my third Yaris) - With an extra 30cc and an extra gear it's become the S-Class of small cars.  Far less pretentious though.

I have a spare Nextbase 512 if someone is interested. You'll just need to add a memory card. I can fit it, should you wish, at the next mod day.

I have added a Blackvue 750 front/rear to the GTR now.

I want a dashcam in my car in case of an accident. I can easily know it was my error or another's driver's fault.
