Never mind the HUD - nice beading on the bonnet.

Have they found you one of those big Lexus coupe hybrids, John?  Although I'm doubtful, as in addition to the compass I'd have thought there'd be a direction indicator to the nearest golf course there too.

Good spot!  Wrong colour (and droop snoop for the oldies here).

What was it like?

Went for a countryside walk today and saw this big fat female, lurking by the lake...

P1050651.JPG   P1050650.JPG

"The wasp spider is a very large, colourful spider that is a recent arrival in the UK from the continent and has slowly spread over the south of England. It builds large orb webs in grassland and heathland, and attaches its silk egg-sacs to the grasses. The web has a wide, white zig-zag strip running down the middle, known as a 'stabilimentum', the function of which is unclear. Mating is a dangerous game for males; they wait at the edge of the web until the female has moulted into a mature form, then take advantage of her jaws being soft and rush in to mate. However, many males still get eaten during this time."

She had a small white parcel by her jaws (see 2nd pic), which might have been her husband.

That's fantastic, thank you.

The last two sentences of the description are hilarious too.  Isn't nature funny; and if only Wasp Spiders had "men's magazines" or their version of mumsnet - say dadsnet, as opposed to pistonheads . . .

Thinking about this:

a recent arrival in the UK from the continent and has slowly spread over the south of England.

Considering the fact that it's wise that the male is out of the way before the female gets her teeth in, haven't they been widespread in the north of England for decades, if not centuries?

You wouldn't be allowed to call a mainstream newspaper cartoon character Andy Capp these days. I actually feel a bit dodgy about even posting it here. Times change.

Continuing the theme of video of the day, last week while away I finally got to visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. It doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as Duxford or Hendon, and it's nowhere near as big or as well known as those places either. But what it does have, which I didn't actually realise until it featured on TV a few days before our planned visit, is a Lancaster bomber they're currently restoring to full airworthiness.

As it now has working engines you can be relieved of in excess of £300 to have a ride while it taxis down the runway - It's on my birthday list for next year now. Not quite in the same league as Seb flying one, but it's as close as I'm ever gonna get.

Anyway enough of the babble - if you're into this sort of thing the place is well worth a visit and it sounds awesome, a lot better than the vid conveys.

https://youtu.be/cDj1778ZIjM

and coming back in after. Don't you just hate those boy racers that sit there revving their engines...

https://youtu.be/mLhYEIoWvrk

Upcoming dates this month if you're in the area (if you're not local and want somewhere to stay, let me know):

Thanks for that, Chas. I saw it on TV recently, but didn't realise they'd got that far with it. What a beautiful piece of machinery. I love the way those engines splutter into life.

A popular location for photographs in Manchester city centre yesterday afternoon and this morning (the words "Oh" and "dear" also sprang to mind):

IMG_20180910_093827.jpg  IMG_20180910_111033.jpg

It proves you never know what's beneath your feet.  Or otherwise.

From time to time there were several persons in yellow waistcoats hanging around.  One of them told me that apparently it weighs twenty tons and that there was someone on it when it fell in, but they were ok.  I made the bloke who told me laugh when I said that "I bet he was a bit lighter in the bowel department afterwards . . .".
