Hi all,

Long time no see!

You'll be pleased to know I still have the Z.

However...The title gives it away. Steering lock failed on Saturday. Dealer has confirmed today it needs replacing.

I'm in the process of obtaining the part number, as my car was registered September 2010, so of course it's ouside of the criteria. I have in the meantime contacted Nissan UK and I had a case handler contact me this morning saying they won't help me with a gwg etc.

I've now escalated the issue to see what happens, as they want £1049 to replace it.

Happy days!

Sorry to hear about that.  Do you know if your car had it's steering lock replaced in 2013 when the VSC was announced?  Please post up the failed part number when you have the info (you could also PM me your VIN and / or Nissan CS reference number if that's OK).

I find it outrageous that Nissan are still charging for replacing a known fault.

Did you report it to Nissan Customer services at the time mate?

Thats dissapointing mate - given everyone with any contact with the 370 knows about it, sometimes it amazes me how much more knowledge there are in owners clubs than main franchise dealers.

Was this issue ever resolved on later cars I understood some of the early teething problems were - or do we all face the chance of this happening in the future?   It seems from reading threads that the colder temperatures are something that tips a lock over the edge?

The dealer didnt have a clue what I was on about when I got them to replace mine last summer. Also I do wonder how many of these steering lock failures are diagnosed correctly given that the clutch pedal switch seems to be a common fault and also prevents the 370z from starting.

OK, thanks for replying.

As has been said here and in other threads, there was a known issue with these locks back in 2013.  At the time I liaised with Nissan UK on behalf of the club and they released a VSC (I'm not taking all the credit) to get the locks replaced free of charge - see this notice.

Recently I have been back in touch with Nissan UK because we've had a few cases arise again within the club.  So Nissan Customer Services are now looking out for failures and these will be highlighted if you report the issue direct to them, rather than via your dealer.

Therefore, I would urge anyone with a steering lock issue to report it to Nissan CS rather than just take it to their dealer to repair.  By all means get your car to your dealer, but raise a call with Nissan CS and get a reference number.

For reference, here is how to contact Nissan Customer Services.

Nice one Paul, where/how do I check to see if mine was replaced previously, I did a bit of searching and found quite a few things on fixes and stuff but couldn't see anything on how to check? (bearing in mind I'm a complete novice with this sort of stuff)

I`ve heard mention on previous discussions about the steering lock failures that Nissan stopped putting steering locks on later 370`s all together.

Anyone know if this is the case and from what year?

I am 2014 and I have a lock.  So they definately fitted them 4 years ago.

It's a case of putting your head under the steering column and looking up!  The lock is labelled with the part code.  It's tricky to get into position so I would recommend filming under there with your phone and pausing playback when you hit the jackpot!

I too heard that but I don't know for sure.  Can someone with a newish model confirm if the steering wheel locks and you hear it disengage when you put the car into ACC?

From memory i think Nissan discontinued the steering lock from 2012, thats why i keep saying take the fuse out and if necessarry replace it with a blown one, no more worries !

Why would replacing the fuse with a blown one cure it?

Surely having no fuse at all would give the same result as in the circuit is broken.

If you remove the fuse (which must be done whilst the lock is working, disengaged, and the ignition on or the fault light will persist and you can't drive the car) then I strongly advise you tell your insurer. If you fail to advise them you may not be covered in the event of theft.

I think the idea of inserting a blown fuse is to disguise the fact that the lock has been deliberately disabled.
