Encouraged by PaulS I've decided to post this on here. The objective is to keep me motivated making progress!

As part of my (continual) unpacking I came to this last week:

IMG_1302.JPG

Purchase in 1973 this was intended to keep me occupied whilst imposing on a rallying friend of mine's hospitality...

IMG_1303.JPG IMG_1304.JPG IMG_1305.JPG IMG_1306.JPG

Good progress was made initially but in 1974 it was put into storage. It has since remained in its box, and I've tried to keep it at the top of the pile whenever the boxes were moved around.

Upon unpacking, it became clear that at some point the handling of the box had not got the care that the contents deserved. Two areas in particular require significant attention before I can get back to the detailed assembly...

The first has a broken strut / shock absorber, and unfortunately the broken off piece is nowhere to be found:

IMG_1307.JPG IMG_1308.JPG

The interior has disassembled itself but all those parts are around so this is not critical:

IMG_1309.JPG IMG_1310.JPG

The other major task will be to repair the roof panel of the body. There are two large cracks to be dealt with:

IMG_1311.JPG IMG_1312.JPG IMG_1314.JPG IMG_1315.JPG

Most other parts seem to be painted and ready for assembly.

Luckily I still have the build (workshop?) manual:

IMG_1316.JPG IMG_1317.JPG IMG_1318.JPG

So first step will be to replenish my supplies of adhesives - I don't think the 40 year old stuff will be usable!

If there are any kitbuilders out there, any tips gratefully received!

Brilliant!  Race you to get the cars finished!!

It's a very detailed model, I'm impressed!

If you fancy a little more incentive, then see how much this one is up for on eBay  And the bonnet doesn't even fit!

I think the golden rule here is that no adhesive should be visible when the build is finished. This may help...

That is cool 44 years since you bought it!
Looks like a fair amount of work has been done but I reckon paul will finish his first!
I see it has an oil cooler and airhorns wonder what engine mods that car had?

I think you could be right about finishing. The suspension part that is broken is load-bearing, and the piece missing, is going to be difficult to overcome. A 3D printer might be able to do it, but no idea where I'd find the spec of the part itself....

Is it just that one part broken in 2 or are there other bits?  I wondered if it might be possible to reinforce the repair by wrapping some fuse wire around it then gluing and painting over.

that's the dilemma - the part broke, effectively in two places, and the bit between them is missing. Its the bit that goes inside the spring joining the top of the strut to the lower (I suppose its really the shock absorber). And I'm not really able to see exactly what it is on the non-broken ones because they are assembled and inside the spring.

Some more thinking required - I'm good at that!

Here's a thought...  How about leaving it broken and 'distressing' the car a little and putting it into a scene?  For example - the car in a garage are (since you have an axle stand) or along the side of a dirt track.

For years i haven't been a "completer/finisher". Just for once id like to confound everyone...

I think what i really need is to find a mint but not started kit so i can see what im trying to replicate.

Apparently some people are breaking some kits and selling them as 'spares'.  It's a bit of a money spinner by all accounts!

Yep I've noted that. And after further investigation I've deduced the broken part is inside the strut leg so I'd need two of the parts sprues: E for the strut legs and L for the Chrome piston. I'll keep my eyes peeled and meanwhile....

I wonder if their isn't a missing section but is inside the strut leg. It is made up of two halves glued together so two alternate plans might be:

1) Split the leg open, find the missing bit and rebuild it with some re-inforcement. Or

2) Try and glue the top piece of the shock absorber piston on to the missing piece (if I can see the end) and pull it out and then do the re-inforcement.

Think I'll stop talking about this now and see what I can find!

Right. It seems quite possible the broken part is inside the two halves of the strut leg. But its a couple of mm down the slot and doesn't seem to want to move towards the opening.

IMG_1326.JPG

I estimate the diameter of the piece I need to get a grip on is about 1.5 to 2mm. I don't want to try fastening to it with a permanent glue as this will probably make it un-reusable. So a temporary glue on the end of a M1.4 screwdriver might just work. But what sticky stuff should I use?

Alternately, I might be able to buy a very small tap, M1 size, and drill (manually) into it from the end and then pull it out.

Any glue (or better) idea anyone?
