Hi there,

Took my 2007 350z out at the weekend (first time in ages!) and after about 10 miles or so, the exhaust got louder like it's blowing. Tried to take a look but couldn't see where it was blowing from - did check the exhaust isn't falling off!!

The exhaust is standard currently.

So before I go into a local exhaust dealer - if there's a better exhaust to the standard one or particular type/brand that Zed owners have used, could some one let me know please?

I'm not looking to scare old ladies with the noise as I go down the street nor am I looking to frighten my insurance company with blistering performance gains.

I see talk of Stainless steel exhausts and different configurations but i'm just looking for a good solid replacement - if Stainless steel is the way forward, then fine but the prices look horrendous! And for what gain?

Anyway, as you can probably tell, i'm not techy but I love my zed and obviously want the best "standardish" replacement - or at least want to be able to ask about options in the exhaust place when I visit.

Should I even visit a local exhaust dealer?

Any information gratefully received.

Thanks

Dave

If it's blowing from the area of the back box it may be possible to get it welded far more cheaply than buying a new back box. I did.

As Chubbs has mentioned it's cheaper to repair as long as the rest of the exhaust system is intact.

Common place for the exhaust to blow is where the back box meets the centre pipe.

Loads of replacement exhausts available, Milltek, Invidia, cobra sport and Scorpion all make reasonably priced systems

If you cant explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.

Thanks Guys, I'll see what the local exhaust people say is wrong and take it from there.

Thanks for your speedy replies, very much appreciated!

Hi - I was looking for a thread on 350z exhausts thinking this might be a common question,  and couldn't find exactly what I want so I thought I'd revive this one.

I was recently lucky enough to get an advisory on my 350z exhaust which gives me the excuse I need to change out my genuine back box for something slightly fruitier and justify as a necessity to the Mrs. (so please no talk of welding options).

I don't want to go down the de-cat option and scare old ladies as per davebr, but I'd just like to turn the volume up a bit at about 3.5k revs and am thinking this would probably be done with a Scorpion or Cobra box.

I anybody has had the opportunity to compare the 2 (or has a better idea) I'd be grateful for advice

Cheers

Steve

As far as I know, both Scorpion and Cobra are loud and droney, whereas Invidia and Miltek are loud but liveable-with (ie the drone is controllable, not constant). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a 2007 Zed with a resonated Cobra exhaust on it, and I don't think it's exceptionally loud or droney. There is a little bit of drone at around 2,500rpm on light-ish throttle loads, but that's it. And, like any exhaust, it's worse for the first few hundred miles before it cokes up a bit inside. It is quite a good sound in the upper half of the rev range, particularly in the lower gears.

To be honest, exhaust preference - particularly when it comes to the sound - is a very personal thing, so I'd listen to a few examples on YouTube or even in person yourself first.

2007 350Z (my second Zed) - When you give up driving, you’re not going to look back wistfully on the car you owned with the nicest dashboard top or speaker grilles. You’re going to remember a car for its excitement and how it made you feel.
2011 Yaris 1.33 (my third Yaris) - With an extra 30cc and an extra gear it's become the S-Class of small cars.  Far less pretentious though.

Thanks both

Will do a bit more googling - I certainly want one a bit louder than OEM.

I couldn't even hear my exhaust in the European tunnels on the "run-to" in 2017 over the sound of the other cars - embarrassing

Also planning a clutch and roof this winter so an expensive winter indeed! I seem to be settling on an LUK clutch but haven't found where to have it fitted yet

To be fair there was a lot of competition! :bose:

I might be thinking of clutches this year too.  The obvious specialist choice to fit one in the South East is Abbey Motorsport but I was going to speak to a local garage to me (D&D Autos, Ashford) who have been very good to me last year.  They've no specific Z experience but some of the mechanics came from Nissan (just across the road).

[. . .]

That surprises me.  As a previous owner of an MY06 Zed with a standard exhaust, and no mods other than a pop charger, if you poked the sleeping tiger under the bonnet hard enough (if you'll pardon the clichés) it roared more beautifully than almost any other noise I can think of.  In truth, it passes water from a great height on the sound of an HR Zed even with pipercross filters and an aftermarket exhaust.

Boy does the car get noticed when the exhaust is changed.....

I had the same happen on my 350z - I was driving into work one day on the A14, lifted off to come up the slip road and it went loud.  It sounded so much better  .  The 350z is louder stock than the 370z anyway.  I found it had separated.

When I looked under the car it looked like one pipe had blown away from the other.

As well as a load of off the shelf exhaust solutions, there is an option for having a tailored one.  You can then make it sound exactly as you want.  My custom when the Valves are closed is not much louder than stock.  But has a less abrasive sound.  As for when its loud.  Well it sounds like it always should have done.

Don't get me wrong -I like the stock exhaust  - Can't decide if my hearing is fading with old age or if it's the inner boy racer wanting to annoy people.

Either way a little louder would be better - reluctant to get one made as trying to keep to a sensible budget and also it sounds more complicated and more potential to get it wrong- I think the Cobra may have what I need from You Tube (although spent ages looking and found out several non related things like how Dynamo does his tricks and various supercar reviews - Now I remember why I don't often go onto You Tube - It's hard to leave! - managed to avoid cat videos -phew)

Paul - Maybe I should get a ramp and we could do our own clutches (although I'm not the best with the spanners if I'm honest)

Alternatively there's a Mr Clutch in Canterbury I've emailed for a price and Ivydene have been recommended and seem to have good reviews

What you need is a roof power bulge.  How about a nice glass 'observation roof'? :teeth:
