My early Chistmas-prezzie-to-self arrived today. Being a novice with electrical stuff I'm in no rush to fit it. I'll re-look at the youTube videos first and also make sure it's not going to trigger an MOT fail.

Chuffed to bits that it cost £59 including shipping (bought on AliExpress.com). It's currently selling at £129 from a UK retailer of Z parts, so I could have bought two and still been in pocket. The package arrived from China in 9 days, trackable all the way.

Moderately easy to fit mate, just have a Google around the wire colours. On the one I bought (likely all from the same factory), I think the low/high red colours were matched up to different wire colours on the car. Otherwise, it's quite a straight forward job.

Also agree with the price of some UK sellers of the item, mad really when you can just wait a few more days and save a lot of coin!

I have one fitted and went through MOT last year with no problem.

Just seen that Tarmac Sportz have one of these lights in stock and currently sell them for £84 + shipping, so if you needed one very urgently you might think it's worth paying them the extra 22 quid to get it sooner.

Imho, Tarmac Sportz also do the most watchable* youTube installation video for this product. I like his clear, no-nonsense presentation, unlike many of the others, which make my skin creep. Maybe I'm just getting old and don't appreciate narcissistic, bigheaded twerps with their caps on the wrong way round, like I used to.

*Not saying I agree with all of his methods. For example, even as a novice I feel that his wire-joining/waterproofing technique is decidedly suspect.

Nice bit of kit that. What does the middle bit do?

It's an extra reversing light - quite bright, judging by what I've seen on videos.

Very nice mate.  I like :)

When I tried to remove my fog light to wrap that part of the bumper I had a problem where the nuts were rusted to the thread and when I tried to undo them the thread just spun around in the fog light.  I expect yours wont be as bad but it might be worth spraying some WD40 on the threads a few times now to save you hassle later.

If you want help with the wiring and fancy a trip to Kent then I'll be happy to lend a hand.

Thanks Paul. It's a tempting offer. I'll see how it goes - I'm hoping this purchase might encourage me to clear the garage enough to get the car in it. Fat chance!

Two very small steps forward on this mini project...

1. I've done a test removal/clean-up of the OEM fog light set-up.

Having WD-40'd it twice over the past week, the two 10mm nuts came off easily. Nissan have used loctite on the threads, but it presented no issues.

  • Firstly the metal bracing plate came off (held with 3 x nylon stud clips). As it was looking rusty in places I took the opportunity to give it a lick of black Hammerite.
  • Secondly the 2 x 10mm nuts on the lamp unit were unscrewed (the lower one was quite rusty, the upper one was fine).
  • Thirdly, the foglight slid out of the front of the bumper.
  • Finally, I unclipped the wiring connector and the clear plastic foglight housing came out.

foglight oem.jpg

2. I've just bought some waterproof connectors from Aliexpress. Fairly sure they're the same as the OEM Nissan foglight connectors, so I can do a partial 'plug 'n play' fitting of the new lamp. Now I need to wait patiently for them to arrive from China.

Now I'll temporarily re-fit the OEM unit when the Hammerite has dried, happy in the knowledge that it'll be a straightforward swap, when the connectors get here.

Update:

The electrical connectors arrived from China this morning. Phew - as I hoped, they're pretty much identical to the existing Nissan one. In other words, they fit, for a plug 'n play solution.

IMG_20181229_114844970.jpg

So, I used a new connector to wire one up to two of the new lamp's wires to the existing fog light connector - black for neutral and green (for the brighter red light, which I intend to use as the fog light) and tested it on the car. It works and it looks really good, but as it's daylight the photo's rubbish, so I won't bother posting it.

I'll do a full connection sometime after the MOT, which is very soon!

Yay - fitted and working!

I've now got an all-in-one 3rd reversing light, 4th brake light and fog light, all enhanced with waterproof connectors, shrink wrap tubing and plenty of tape. I added 2 extra in-line connectors which sit inside the boot, so I can disconnect the 4th brake light and/or the reversing light if an MOT inspector gets a bit arsey.

This photo shows the 2 wires on the R/H tail light cluster that I tapped into for the reversing light (green & white wire) and the 4th brake light (red wire).

IMG_20181231_105727194_HDR.jpg

Had one scary moment when I switched everything on - the R/H OEM reversing light didn't work. Then I remembered I'd dropped that bulb onto a ceramic tiled floor earlier in the day. Although the bulb looked ok, it was actually blown. One new bulb later and wooohooo - everything works!

NOW I NEED MORE LED's...

...Of course now I want ultra bright cool white LED bulbs for my reversing lights, to match my new one. The OEM filament bulbs look decidedly yellow. Anyone know of some good quality, very bright reversing light LED's?

Apologies for the poor quality of the photos - it was dank and the car had only just been started.

I'm trying to resist getting one myself.  I have too many projects on the go already!
