Not really an event or meet, but wasn't sure where else to put this..

I've been chatting to Seb about visiting the BoB Memorial flight. For those that don't know him he's a long time (founding?) member of this forum and a previous Zed owner (but now has a lovely F Type), but is still an active member and we see him at events from time to time when he can make it.

He also happens to be a Lancaster pilot in the aforementioned Memorial Flight and when I was talking to him about it he mentioned popping up when the Lanc had it's first test flight after winter maintenance, hence the shortish notice as they weren't sure when it'd be ready. But it's pencilled in for next Fri and he said he doesn't mind if a couple of others want to come along too. You'd need to get to RAF Conningsby (Lincs) for 12, I'm thinking we'd perhaps meet up somewhere local a bit beforehand so we can go in all together.

There is a chance it may not happen, weather/technical issue etc and I'd let people know as soon as I can if that's the case, but even if it's not flying if he's still going up (he's not based there so may not travel up if it's not flying) we'd be welcome along for a tour - I think it's safe to say we'd get a slightly better tour than joe public ;).

So if anyone is interested let me know. Hoping to bring a friend with me so there will be space for a couple more.

I've been and it's truly a fantastic experience.  Even Sarah (who isn't particularly into aircraft or anything military!) had a brilliant time.

Make time to go, this is not to be missed.  Even if she doesn't fly it will still be epic!

wish I could be there, but, once again, work gets in the way - say hi to Seb for me though

I am off to "Daks over Duxford" tomorrow though, so 22 flying Daks should satisfy me for a while...

I love the Lancaster but I loooove the Dakota. Seb actually flew the Dakota at Fairford 100 celebration last year (along with a Lanc and a couple of Spitfires) - it was bl@@dy awesome.

Just a quick update as just a bit knackered. My day started at 5am and got back home about 10pm, the Lanc didn't fly in the end but it didn't stop us from having an awesome day. Lots more to follow. Massive thanks to Seb and his colleagues for a day none of us will forget in a hurry.

Even though I've done a tour with Seb myself I'm still jealous of you guys going yesterday.

It's an amazing place to visit - especially when you know one of the pilots and have the access you guys did.  None of that standing behind the barrier for Seb's mates!!  I did feel a little sorry for the general public the day I went because they're obviously such huge fans of the aircraft and there's me sitting in the cockpit of the Lanc!

Chas, I love the pic of you 'as pilot' - nearly as much as the one of you cleaning your car!!

I'm looking forward to the rest of the pics and hearing a few stories from the day.

:notworthy:

Finally here's a load more pics from our fantastic day on Friday at RAF Coningsby with Seb.

There was a technical issue with the engines as they were warming up ready for takeoff, so they had to put the Lanc back in the hanger to fix it. Unfortunately by the time the issue was sorted the expected wind, which had brought the flight forward to 10am to try and avoid it, had arrived preventing any flying that day.

It may have played into our hands a little bit with the guided tour as not only did we get an in depth look around all the aircraft in the BBMF hanger including getting to sit in a Spit and explore the inside of what Seb calls the 'reverse tardis' (the Lanc - and you can see why, for what looks like a large plane on the outside, there's surprisingly little room on the inside, especially for a tall, big boned, unfit lump like me!) But we also had a guided tour of one of the Tempests from one of their crew, amazing. Understandably we weren't allowed to take photos though.

Interspersed with a cheap lunch in the officers mess and finishing off with drinks there, well those of us that weren't driving did... we left about 8pm (we'd arrived just before 8:30am).

Seb, his colleagues and boss were absolutely amazing, more than happy to chat and you can tell how much it means to them all to be involved in something very special, especially when you consider they give up a lot of their weekends for what is a voluntary position. I'm sure another visit could be arranged later in the year.

Chas. Cracking upload of the days pics.

What can I say apart from a huge thanks to all involved and everyone we met. A wonderful visit with fantastic people dedicated to make memories for generations to come. I am pinching myself and still asking how on earth did this happen. What a great day.
It would be fantastic if we could get back up there at the end of season event with a selection of Zeds etc as Seb suggested?
Another “run to” a not so secret location would be fitting to support #BBMF

I see no reason why we can't organise a meet with a visit there part of it.  I know Seb and everyone at the BBMF are extremely busy but if we can put a date in the diary and stay over nearby it would be an epic event :teeth:

Yeah Seb mentioned a particular end of season event in September, he said he'd put our car club forward to attend, but regardless of whether that comes off or not another visit as part of a meet would be great and if that wasn't enough WW2 military aircraft for one weekend, you could also visit the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre a few miles up the road (I posted about this last year somewhere) where they're in the middle of restoring a Lanc and a Mosquito, well worth a visit.

Gasitup I hadn't posted any of your pics, I know there'll be a lot of crossover but you had some cracking ones plus the group shot in the Lanc that was great, get sorting!!

Excellent photos. They give a real feel for the place and the sense of pride everyone has in the aircraft.
