Hi everyone

In the last few months my 370z has developed a bit of a nasty and annoying habit.

Quite often when I go to unlock it with the key fob, the driver's side door doesn't unlock. I then have to climb over the passenger seat  and open the driver's side door to let me in. The warning light will keep telling me that there is no key present, even when its in the car, until both doors are shut.

It sometimes even makes it so I can't open either door and have to climb through the boot, which is not easy! In these circumstances, the warning light will keep saying no key even if I put it as close to the key port as possible from the outside.

The 'manual' key doesn't work either.

I wouldn't have thought that the battery in the key fob was low as I changed it less than 2 years ago and the car is hardly used. Its mainly a weekend car nowadays.

I do have a spare key for it, but its at my parent's house! I'll pick it up at the weekend and see if that key does the same.

Just wanted to get your thoughts in case it might be something more serious than a dodgy key.

Thanks in advance.

Aiden

It sounds like a low battery to me.  Whilst you say it was changed around 2 years ago, button cell quality can vary wildly.  As an example, on my house alarm, if I buy cheap eBay cells (which I mostly do to be honest), the house alarm still says the battery needs replacing even after a new (cheap) cell has been installed.  If I put in a Duracell version then the house alarm is content.

I would try a branded button cell just to rule that out (only a few quid).

I am however curious... what do you mean by "The 'manual' key doesn't work either"?  That should open the lock no matter what...

My Top Tip for buying branded batteries is to go to Boots. Recognisable brands at competitive prices.

Tried this and unfortunately didn't work.

I'm pretty sure it was one of the big named brand batteries I used (Duracell maybe) so should be good quality.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try a new battery since they are cheap enough.

Yea the 'manual' key doesn't seem to work with unlocking the car either. I know its the right key as I have used it to unlock the car in the past. I way really confused by that as well.

I'm also confused why the car won't unlock either door when the key fob is playing up, but the boot always opens.

Tried the spare key and that also has the same problem.

I forgot to pick up some new batteries when I went shopping earlier so I'll try that next.

Another point to remember is that the key is always emitting  a signal. So the batteries will deplete even if not used.

I remember using the manual key once in my 370z to unlock. It doesnt make any noise, no click or anything but once turned I could open the door. I wonder if its worth scanning the car to see if any of the locks are showing a DTC, if in fact they do show DTC.

Not a lot of the symptoms make sense, especially not unlocking with the manual key.  Keep testing various bits and keep us updated in case anyone can help...

Changed the battery in the fob and made no difference. Not driven the car for a few weeks and went to open the drivers door today. Wont open from the outside, inside or with the manual key. When trying to open from the inside, it feels like the handle isnt connected to anything anymore?

On a 350 it always feels like that if it is still locked.

Sounds like door card off time to see what's going on inside.  I don't recall anyone having issues with failed door locks in the past but there's always a first.  However if you can't even open the door now then that may prove difficult to do...

I don`t think it is a door look issue as the OP states that the passenger door is affected also.

I just don`t see how the doors can`t be unlocked but the boot can and the car can be started. It seems like the car is receiving the signal from the fob but the message isn`t getting to the actuator.

I`m inclined to think it is more of an electrical problem than a physical one.

How is this going?  It's an odd one.

The only reason I can think that the manual key doesn't work is because either the lock is seized (wouldn't be surprised because it's never used) or because the electric door lock isn't engaging properly somehow, and because the door isn't fully locked or fully unlocked the mechanism isn't working.

Have you given the key hole a squirt with WD40?

I guess it makes no difference if you use the unlock button on the fob or the button below the divers door handle?  Does the door lock OK with the fob?  Is it just that it doesn't unlock?  Also, does the door lock/unlock switch (on the driver door pull handle) work as expected?

I would be tempted to put both windows down and experiment with locking & unlocking the door on a dry day.  With the windows down you can pull the handle, etc. without having to crawl through the car.

The only other thing I can think of is that the selective unlocking has gone bonkers.  Does the door unlock properly if you press unlock on the fob twice in quick succession?

Actually, thinking about it again, I reckon it's quite straightforward to diagnose. But there might be more than one issue.

I'd recommend putting your ear to the doors and testing the locks. If the actuators are trying to work you'll hear them. My guess is that they are but there's a mechanical fault.

With regard to the flashing key light, it could be that the car knows that the locks aren't operating properly and is trying to warn you (although I've not heard of that). My worry is that it's the steering lock warning you it's going to fail.

Thought I would update you guys on this.

Took car to garage on 23 March. Basically, the locking mechanism has completing gone. Its stuck in garage nearly two months later as there is no locking mechanism on the car and its much safer there than on my driveway unlocked. still awaiting the part from Nissan. Looks like it will be a while for the part with everything going on at the moment.

Unfortunately, the door card had to be busted open which proved very difficult when the door couldnt open.

Ive opted to just have the door lock mechanism replaced and Ill sort the door card at a later date. Nissan quote £900 for the door card alone!

Missing the Z and cant wait to have it back, whenever that will be ....

Aidan, I’m sorry to hear your latest. In 13 years of Zed driving I have not heard of a problem like this. I am hoping that you may get a suggestion here from one of our vehicle restorers that might enable you to get the door card cost much reduced by sourcing an alternative.

There was a scrapper on eBay late last year, I got the interior door handle from him. I'll find the seller later and you could drop him a message 👍

Thanks, much appreciate guys.

I don't actually know or have seen the extent of the damage to the door card yet.

Hopefully its not too bad. the garage guy said that it was in the corner and you can't really see it when the door is closed. I'll probably make do for a while if the damage isn't too bad. Can think of much more exciting parts to get for the Z first  B)
