Hi Sarah yeah the VQ engine looks great. I can see why it is such a complex engine when you start pulling it to bits like this ! This makes evo 4G63 and Honda K20a engines like like kids toys! Lol.

I'm looking forward to getting the crank out so I can pull the rods/pistons and finally see why this motor was smoking.

Mark I've thought about getting the timing cover polished and having the cam covers painted rosso red to make the block look a little more exotic!

Today's fun....

For a few hours work i got alot done this afternoon!

Few item's that were removed today, Windage tray, block girdle, crank caps, crank, oil pump, all rod's and piston's and finally i pulled the engine mounts off.

Some more pic's..

Windage tray removed. And block girdle removed.

Crank cap's removed.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0315.jpg

Starting to removed some of the rod's and piston's.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0316.jpg

All rod's and Piston's remove now!!

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0317.jpg

Oil pump and crank removed. Holly crap the crank is heavy! It must weigh 20kg at least!

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0322-1.jpg

Close up of the under piston oil spray's.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0324-1.jpg

Rebuilt the bottom of the crank cap's and windage tray just to keep them out the way and clean.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0326-1.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0327-1.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0328-1.jpg

Final shot of the fully stripped down block. It's really light!

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0329-1.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0330-1.jpg

Crank,rod's and piston's removed.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0332-1.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0333-1.jpg

More under piston's oil spray's.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0324.jpg

Now for the diagnosis!!!!! ;) ;)

 ;) ;) 5 out of the 6 piston's have cracked ring lands!!!!!! :bangin: :bangin: :bangin:

Some look ok and some are only held together with the rings!!!! Cylinder 1 (the front driver side) is the only one that looks in good nick. The pistons have no sign's of detonation on the flame face but to crack 5 out of the 6 ring land's it may have been a very bad tune or the engine has been over rev'ed??

All the bearings look in ok condition and non of the rod's "look" bent. The main thing is there is no damage as far as i can see to the block!! :teeth: ;)

Ill get some close up pic's of the broken piston's when i've cleaned them up.

Tim.

Not much happened this week guy's. Ive been stuck in work for a change this week! lol..

Im still in two minds on what route im going to go for?

Option 1.

Fit the APS kit and APS fuel system to my stock engine and run low boost for a year or so while i build the spare bottom end.

Option 2.

Build the bottom end from the word go and change the fuel system for a CJ motorsport or AAM full return system.

This will take me ALOT longer to get done but would be the most cost effective route (or that's what i keep telling myself! haha.. even though the outlay would be far greater to begin with ££££???)

So far im waiting for quotes from TDI london for a bottom end build and full long block assembly and mapping. Ive also been taking with Mark from abbey Msport and need to get round to putting an email together of what work i may need doing??

I happy building the bottom end up (possibly cosworth rod's/piston's) myself as i can take my time and make sure everything is done correcly but the assembly of the long block is what im worried about! Fitting the heads is no big job with the block on my engine stand but the set up of the cam timing i think i would want a pro to do :teeth:

Any way guys chip in your thought's because im still not sure what i want to do??

Great project Tim, keep up the good work. Once I get my Supra sorted I think I may be tempted to build the Zed.

Yeah kev a built engine in your zed would be a beast! I gave Gaz a ring today to ask if you guys know any good machine shops to do some engine work for me??

If you know Kev from any supra builds you've done then PM me mate.

Ok guys the three shop's im looking at having some work done at are, Abbey motorsport, TDI london, and Advanced motorsport engineering (AME).

If i go for a bottom end build i my build list could look like this;

Cosworth forged H-beam rod's

Cosworth forged piston's (95.5 or 96mm im not sure yet)

Cosworth headgasket

Cosworth headstud kit

Cosworth mainstud kit

Cosworth race bearings/OEM

Reconditioned OEM heads/valve train.

Polished crank jurnals, skimmed heads and re-bored/honed block.

Koyo/japspeed 50mm rad.

GTM oil cooler kit.

APS garrett twin turbo kit.

APS 3.5 inch downpipe's or keep my HFC's??

AAM or CJ motorsport stage 1 fuel return.

Deatschworks 600/800cc injectors.

Haltech platinum ECU.

Defi boost, oil temp & exhaus temp guages.

AEM wideband.

Its very hard to get a good accurate quote from builders because they don't know how long/ if it all goes to plan what sort of cost will be involved.

Ill get my a** in gear soon and get this thing going! lol...

No mate the thing is i've not had time to rob the bank yet!! lol..

Im still in two minds due to the cost of building the engine where as i can have this up and running on m stock block for about £1500 more now??

I was looking at cams but people in the USA are making 800WHP on stock heads and stock cams!! I would want a high boost setting of around a bar. (14-15psi to give around 500WHP so the stock cams and heads will get me there)

Also Dan@AME would advise not to use cams due to the added wear on the valve train and more things to fail! I like the idea of only upgrading the things that NEED to be upgraded such as the internals and cooling system.

Depends a lot on where you want to end up, luckily you have a spare block which you can use if you pop the stock motor but you are never going to get the full potential out of thev rest. Also how long will you keep the car. If you intend keeping it for at least a couple of years then I would def go for upgrading the internals. Mine is running 450-480 & thats a lot of fun. I dont know what suspension or brakes you are running. Mine has Tein Suspension & better brakes & can just about cope with that, much more & you will need to look at putting more rubber on the road as well, all will add to the cost.

I get the feeling from your enthusiasm if you build it stock you will always wonder why you didnt go all the way.

Of the builders you mention I have trusted Abbey with mine, mainly on recomendation & experience I had with them a few years ago with my Subaru, they seem to do a good job for a fair price & are refreshinly lacking BS. I havent had any dealings with the others so cant comment

Tim, looking at your pictures, your failure has most definately been caused by Det.

Good luck with the build mate. B)

Alex.

Yeah Alex I would say Det looks like the cause of this faliure! No wonder the motor had crank case pressure problems!!!!!

Sam form TDI gave me a very good explantion of ring land faliure cause by det.
