My Little Weekend Project!

Presumably they are the weakest link and being on the upstroke, when premature detonation happens,

therebye incurring multiple times the force they should be subject to

(when they are at the top and almost 'static')

????

The way it was explained to me mate was when Det. occurs due to lean conditions the flame face on the piston can go from its normal operating temp (400c approx) and the underside of the piston and skirt around 100c. to around 900c. this temp differential cause's irregular expansion on the piston and makes the flame face piston to wall clearance far to small and cause's the ring lands to touch to cylinder wall. The cast piston is very brittle and as soon as the ring land catches the wall it can and will snap off!! :(

Just a little update on the build too....

Finally got my block down to DRB engineering where my mate works and got it into the parts washers.

First wash was degreaser in boiling water. 15mins cycle.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0334.jpg

Then the block was chemical washed in solivent at around 50c. for 15mins

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0335.jpg

Then a finally water wash to remove the solvent.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/djtimodj/IMG_0336.jpg

The block is nice now and ready for machine work

As a few have said before, this is a really interesting thread and makes for great lunchtime reading at work! Keep up the great reporting and pics...I'm fasinated to see how it all ends up. I hope you reach your goal within your time frame and budget...shotgun on a passenger ride at a meet (was I first?!?) :(

Not much of an update but ive had a quote back from TDI for the machine and labour costs :surrender: :shutup2: :band: LOL.....

And i have dropped my timing cover inspection covers off at the polisher's. Both covers polished for £10!! i had a go with sand paper/dremel/metal polish but it would have cost more than £10 in dremel bits!! lol.. they should be done by mid to end of next week.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update on my Engine

Small ends were Ok but 2 of the Cosworth pistons were failing, the map will be checked as the car IMO fuels pretty heavily but its unllikely that it contributed to the problem.

So its a set of new pistons etc & not Cosworth

lookin good tim, did you make a decision on upgrading the internals and everything else then or is it still subject to budget?

Yeah i think in 90% gonna do the internals ow but ive just got to convince jess (my GF) that its the most "cost effective" route!

good luck with that one m8, i suspect you may need to suggest a new pair of shoes on the weekend for her then tell her just after youve brought the shoes

ps - sarah you are not allowed to ask rosie what she thinks of me spending loads on the car, that was a necessity

It just alot of cash to spend so I'm making sure I've selected the 100% correct parts for my engine. StuartJ has posted and PM'ed me about his car cracking to cosworth pistons which is not good! I'm going to ring abbey and speak with mark as to why he thinks they have failed and go from their. I may look in to arias extream duty pistons or mahle? I'm still getting my head around the cost too! Lol. I'm in no rush because I'm building my 2nd engine, I just want to do I right the first time round.

After driving that lambo LP640 my thirst for power is getting worse! I think the 350z with 500WHP would be on par with the lambo and with alot more torque lowdown! It will be a scairy car I think;-)

You wont be disapointed  I find the torque amazing, makes it a very easy car to drive relativly quickly, you arent always hunting for gears, it just pulls. Ive been on a few runs with some very quick exotics & it always holds its ground. The biggest let down is on twisties where things like my Wifes Abarth & Evo's etc with 4WD can get the power down easily but Lambos are useless on those as well.

Just got off the phone with Mark@abbey and he said StuartJ's car looks like the bores were a little lose and has caused to of the piston skirts to crack! Not good! A guy called Valerio (aka theminel) is having a cosworth engine built at TDI at the moment and he was asking on my350z about the large piston to wall clearance the coswoth pistons have to have? Looks like I need to look into wossner as this is what mark has recomened.

I've been doing a little research about internals and I don't think the cosworth gear is worth the money! For the cosworth components for the bottom end it's not far off £2500 where as I can get eagle H beam rods, wiesco 8.8-1 CR pistons Inc rings, ARP L19 head and main stud kit and HKS headgasket for $2029 + shipping and what ever importduty I get stung with! I'm sure it would be around £1500 all in! That means I can put a grand towards a new rev-up oil pump, water pump and a sexy oil cooler! I know I'm ranting now but it keeps rolling round in my head what to do! Alex if your Reading this what's your view on the parts I've listed? The wiescos have very low thermal expansion and only need 0.003inch piston to wall clearance. I want the motor to run nice and smooth so the closer the tolerance the better IMHO.

At those prices and considering your spend, may be worth a little jaunt last min across the pond? Got to think that shipping etc will be the same as a ticket due to the costs...

Whichever parts you end up choosing ensure whoever you use to build the motor is happy with your choice, if you subsequently have any problems with the engine & they had doubts about the parts you are possibly going to have problems prooving if its a bad part or the build. Also I would suggest once you have decided on the parts tell whoever is building it what you are paying & see if they can supply for the same, they may be able to get them a bit cheaper & if they charge you the same it makes the job sweeter for them & its no skin off your nose & you wont have top worry about getting the parts or arguing the toss if they are defective in any way.

Re the wiescos that have very low thermal expansion, are you sure they only need 0.003inch clearance, Im no engineer but that just sounds tooooooo close

Im using a mocal race spec oil cooler that was reasonably priced m8, if your interested i can take some more pictures of it, im told it looks sexy but i didnt buy it for that purpose  (wasnt cheap but it is proven technology) red lining every gear in a 24 hour race with no oil complaints swung it for me :kicking:

haha, ok well pics either tonight or tomorrow m8, bizarrely its actually being used on the 370z gt race cars at the moment, slightly bigger kit than the old one they did for the 350, looks like a little mini intercooler, had a guy on sunday looking at it telling his brother that it was the intercooler for the supercharger that im running, didnt have the heart to tell him there wasnt one on it :kicking:
