Ordered today ready for the new season.  The one I had is starting to wear out after 4 years.  So I thought I would order a new one from the States.  Love these with the shape of the V1 Nismo.  Available in a few colours

As far as I recall, you have to be quite strong and very brave to remove the OEM knob. It's well fixed.

There's no special tool it just unscrews counter clockwise but it is very tight as Chubbs mentioned. A big pipe wrench would be my first plan.

Interesting. My current one moves on the rod. Not much, about 30 degrees and then settles. Feels tight at each extremity....

Loctite on the new one?

Yes, I'd be tempted to put a spot of Loctite on the new one.

I seem to remember advice in the past was to use some grips on the shaft because you need to put a lot of effort in unscrewing the knob.  I used some big grips when I changed over the knob on by 350Z back in the day.

What sort of grips would be recommended that wont mark the shaft?

(Careful! Mistype that as Strapping Wench and someone on here will get all excited....)

Was that around the selecting shaft or the gearknob itself (I did try and find alternate words - honestly)

I still havent managed to get to the back of the garage to look at my spare gearbox but I have checked the maintenance manual and I have to dismantle the centre console to lift the leather boot clear. No mention of anti-clockwise thread though...

Aha. Thought you meant the selector shaft... its that is prone to danage by the locking pliers.

But it needs locking in position otherwise the force of unscrewing the gearknob can twist it in the gearbox and damage it or the selectors.

I thought one of the ten commandments was: "When removing or refitting a 350Z's gearknob, thou shalt use mole grips".

There was also another stone tablet with more detail: Lift the gaitor/surround/centre console up to expose the shaft. Wrap a duster or a cloth around the shaft before fixing the mole grips around it. Hold the grips with one hand, and grab the gearknob with the other. Lock your wrist, and turn from your elbow - it effectively gives you a breaker bar about eighteen inches long - and nothing much can hold up against that.

I removed a gearknob once. Decided never to do it again unless I really had to.

Good luck to anyone attempting it.
