Forward / Front camera for a Nissan 370Z

Recommended Posts

As I mentioned in Chubbs' 'reverse camera' thread, I have been asked to look into making a forward facing camera kit for the 370Z.

Obviously, you will need to buy a forward facing camera - NTSC, non flipped image, and without guide lines (since the Z will add them).

To be honest, that's all you really need because you can plug that into the video input in the centre cubby hole and select 'Aux' on the head unit.

However, I am going to try a video switcher that latches into the reverse camera input so it will automatically select the front & rear camera when you are shuffling the car in a tight spot. You will still need to flip a switch to enable the front camera but the rest will be automatic.

I've done a wiring diagram, have all the components (albeit a temporary camera) and will be having a play with it all soon.

More news as it happens :)

Euphemism Alert! Chubbs will be along shortly.....

I fitted this to Sarah's Juke today. I think it will be a permanent fixture once I get a proper camera for the front (on order).   My plan is to make 2 different looms, 1 for each car.   Let me know i

Prototype made a little less rustic!

I temporarily used an old aerosol lid to house the switch needed to operate it:

gallery_245_426_454410.jpg

In normal operation the Nav screen works as now - Nav screen/radio, etc. when driving then rear camera when in reverse.

However, flick the switch and the front camera shows up on the Nav screen, and if you select reverse the rear camera does, then out of reverse the front camera shows again, etc. until you select normal mode again :)

The theory is sound but I am still waiting for the camera to arrive :bang:

From what I can tell it's somewhere in Switzerland en route from China :?: Anyway, the ebay seller has been good enough to put another one in the post for me...

Finally - the camera has arrived!

It's little:

gallery_245_426_68577.jpg

I asked for an NTSC one, and it says NTSC on the box, and it says PAL on the camera

However, for me it will be OK as my Lilliput screen accepts both formats. If anyone with Premium Connect is thinking of getting one it MUST be NTSC.

Thanks folks :)

So far this is on the Juke although I've already fitted the module to the Zed - just not fitted the camera yet...

I haven't got round to mounting a switch in the Zed yet. I was thinking of using the blank between the heated seat switches (which isn't blank on the roadster) but I can't find a switch that matches well enough. I think anything other than a Nissan rocker switch wouldn't suit.

I could go down a different route and use a push button or something though... Something to think about :)

The other option was to make it automatic - speed sensitive so the front cam comes on below 10mph or so. But I think it might be a hindrance because you might be stuck in traffic and need to use the Nav.

Paul, why not get a nissan rocker from a breaker?

Could you then have 2 positions, one being a manual override for the rear camera too? (for staring that tailgater right in the eye, or in my case showing the passenger the hottie in the car behind without having to adjust the rear view mirror or turn around, neither of which are subtle).

I was wondering about getting one from a breaker. I thought it might be better to find something more 'sustainable' in that if I make any kits up, either like this or something else, I want to be able to buy the switches readily.

I like the idea of it being front / auto / rear mate :)

I'm just bumping this thread because I've had a few people ask about a forward facing camera for the Zed.

I have a few cameras I bought all that time ago, sitting on my bench waiting to be tested!

This is just one option, but there are other possibilities - including using the AUX input on the Connect Premium cars. This solution is one I made for mine though as I don't have an AUX in as standard.

This is awesome Paul.

Sorry if I missed it in the thread but where did you mount the front camera? Is it dash mounted or fitted into the bumper or something?

I missed out on getting my reverse cam kit from you at Mod Day and now im very interested in buying both as I love the idea of a front camera!

Cheers mate :)

The truth is I've not mounted a front camera on the Zed yet! I did for Sarah's Juke and I've even made the box up and installed it on mine but for one reason or another I've still not got round to it

I was thinking of maybe mounting it just under the number plate on that mount, or maybe within the grille beneath. I suppose it will come down to a compromise between the best place for it Vs were it doesn't look bad.

With the 2009 reverse camera kit, it will effectively do this for you because of the 2nd video input. So really all you need is the front camera...

Id definitely look at buying both kits from you! How long until mainstream production? Lol

hey guys,

So i have the premium connect and i am planning on connecting a forward facing wireless cam through the AUX as Paul mentions...

I have already started a "bodge" (pics below) tested the feed from a dvd player in my house to the AUX located in the center console!! Roughly 20 feet from dvd to car through a wall.

I am planning on using the "spare" button (as i have no sync-rev on my auto :) ) to connect a switch to allow the brake ground and speed sensor to be deactivated and reactivated as required!

Cam has not arrived yet but my plan is to look for a location between the front grill and if possible in some way recessed someway to give a little protection... TBC and will post pics once i work it out!!
