LESmo
So I have ordered a set as the boot is starting to grumble at certain heights to stay up. I have ordered Z1 - delivery from the UK distributor. It seems even I should be able to swap them out. I have read good things about these in the states. I have gone for the higher pressure type for heavier wings. The Nismo V1 Wing is fairly heavy, I will do a write up about the fitting when they arrive. I still have the weight in the boot, but I plan to keep that stock. 2 Quote Current - 2014 (14) 370z NISMO in Storm White #229, JDM Carbon Nismo Kickplates, JDM Carbon Nismo B Pillars, Nismo Tyre Caps, Nismo Oil Cap, K&N Filters, MY15 Nismo Start Button. Paul_S
Let us know how it works out Les. Mine have been grumbling in the cold weather. It's not a problem as such, but it would be nicer if they worked properly. 1 Quote 'A standard limited edition Yellow 370Z* with a plethora of minor bespoke mods' *one of 40 don't you know! LESmo
Hi Mate, You may need the Boot Springs replaced. Here is the thread. They don't come cheap though and we of course as we have the heavy wing have to use a different one to the standard spring. http://forums.nissansportz.com/topic/39722-boot-springs-v1-nismo/ What I am finding is the boot will sit half open - which is ok for drying the car off, but it doesn't lift up fully without help - I will let you know how the struts go. The springs did make a difference and stopped a rattle I started to have from the trunk. LESmo
Well they arrived this week - and I thought I would have a go fitting them. Tools needed is a Electrical Flat Blade Screwdriver or similar and something to take the weight of the Trunk/Boot when the change is being made. This is the problem with my old 2014 Gas Struts - they cannot open the boot un-assisted and just drop like a stone http://youtu.be/Fus1e0u6C_4 Installation The process is simple and if it took 5 minutes a side that's probably all. First you need to hold open the boot when the existing struts are removed - I used a garden plastic rake. 1. Using the Screw driver you place it into the band holding the old Strut on - its fairly obvious as they give you a place the screwdriver can fit into, taking the top one on the boot lid off first, just pull it back and tug the strut off its retaining ball joint. Then do the same on the bottom one. 2. You now have the strut off on one side and you will be grateful you have the boot wedged open. Now take the new one - place the Trunk Lid end on first - you will feel it click into place and think I will do the same with the bottom one - however they are slightly longer than the OEM so you will not be able to fit the bottom one on. Leave it hanging (being careful to protect the paint work). 3. Now Repeat the process by removing the other gas strut on the other side - your boot is now being held up by whatever you have used to do it. So if you have a helpful hand that is great - I did it on my own. Go back to the first and put the clip the bottom part of the strut onto its retaining ball joint. You will feel it solidly click. Now taking the retaining clip. Feed the end into the small hole on the ball joint (this will be obvious as they are shipped assembled and you will have had to remove it to fit it). You can then secure it. 5. Repeat the process by fitting the second strut on the other side. 6. Stand back - pretend you are a mechanic and marvel at your work. Watch in amazement as the Boot / Trunk Raises.... http://youtu.be/YF1cM2oXMzM 1 Quote Current - 2014 (14) 370z NISMO in Storm White #229, JDM Carbon Nismo Kickplates, JDM Carbon Nismo B Pillars, Nismo Tyre Caps, Nismo Oil Cap, K&N Filters, MY15 Nismo Start Button. LESmo
And in equal amazement as it doesn't rip off the bumper as it closes I would say the Higher pressure ones are only for the Zed with a heavier wing, I would suspect the normal lower and slightly cheaper version of the Z1 Struts would be ample for the GT Zed and V2 Nismo. However, the higher pressure one probably the right version for the heavier wings. Really easy to do for anyone. Chubbs
Well done, Les. 2 questions... 1. Do you know what pressure (in lbs?) your new struts are? 2. How hard is it to close the lid? Quote A to Zee to B
LESmo
Not sure mate - but I will ask Z1 and see what they say the pressure is of the two types. When I filmed it I closed the trunk with one hand its more resistant than it ever has been - so you can close it with one hand but its definitely more of a work out. Eventually gravity takes over of course and it does drop on its own. 2 Quote Current - 2014 (14) 370z NISMO in Storm White #229, JDM Carbon Nismo Kickplates, JDM Carbon Nismo B Pillars, Nismo Tyre Caps, Nismo Oil Cap, K&N Filters, MY15 Nismo Start Button. LESmo
What I have noticed is over certain frequency bumps I have lost one of the rattles. The Z1's are slower to raise, than the OEM - but they give a quality lift, I would not say the highest pressure ones were the wrong choice for the heavier wing. Just a little niggle - but one I couldn't live with. Deadly-Zed
Thanks for the write-up LESmo, i saw these Z1 struts about a month ago and have considered buying a set for my Z. The current ones need help to raise the boot lid fully up. As i have seen they have worked well for you i will get the Z1's. I think the standard pressure ones will do the job for my boot as i have no wing and have also removed the complete wiper assembly inc. the motor and also the oem weight that was mounted inside. Appreciate your write-up as now i know the Z1's work well and seem to be good quality, thanksDeadly-Zed 1 Quote 350Z TRACK / VQ35HR / AUSDM
