Handbrake Worn Out?

Afternoon all. After a very pleasing service, two pages of green ticks on the Health Check, we took it for a nice run out today to West Devon.

Thats when I discovered that the handbrake is no longer holding the car on inclines - no matter how hard I pull the handle. It doesn't appear to be an adjustment problem as there's hardly any travel.

I've checked several old 350Z threads but they only seem to refer to adjusting the cable. I know the handbrake is on drums within the rear disk hubs...

So I'm wondering if, after 15 years and115k miles, the shoes could be worn out? Anyone had any experience of this?

TIA

There are a few vids on Youtube with adjustments from inside the car. But by the sounds of it - thats not your issue. No hand brake turns for you young man until its fixed. Been doing some rallying :D

When I first got the 350 I though, great, RWD, I'll be able to do handbrake turns just like in my Escort RS1600.

Soon found I was wrong! Its not just the ineffectiveness of the handbrake (as documented elsewhere on here) but its the width of tread on the rear tyres that make it hard to break grip going sideways.

Gave up after three attempts...

I'd be amazed if you have worn out the brake linings, they do very little work other than to hold still. It could still be adjustment. The cable is adjusted under the centre console storage bit thingy but the shoes may still need adjustment using the knurled nut thing in between the brake shoes accessed through a whole in the disk. Or you could have a seized mechanism on one side (or both?).

I'm amazed it wasn't spotted at the service!

And for the avoidance of doubt it is very easy to do a handbrake turn in a zed, just need more speed a lot of space and even better a flat grass field or very wet car park

Thanks Paul. Will get shoe adjustmants checked.

Btw, the whole point of handbrake turns is for when you dont have enough space! As for doing them on grass... I wouldnt be that anti-social 😄

In my experience, handbrakes are not needed for this manoeuvre. Just ESP off, low gear, a heavy foot and a sharp turn of the wheel. Such fun!

I'd begin by adjusting the handbrake at the shoe end - in the interest of advice and guidance, I've done it to get through MOTs once or twice in the past.

Jack (and axle stand - to be safe) the rear end up and remove the wheels. You should see a small hole in the front of the hub/drum in the centre of each rear brake disc. Turn each so that the hole is either at the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position (I think the latter), and you should see a small adjustment screw through the hole. With a screwdriver gently turn each screw clockwise until it won't go any tighter - it will click as you turn it - then turn it anti-clockwise by three clicks.

That should do it. If it doesn't, then I'd do the modern thing and get a man in. It will make a change from the early-nineties (at best) obsession with handbrake turns.

Thanks for that Flabby. I'm now in an ownership situation where, although I have a garage it has no electricity and no space outside to bring the car out and work on it without blocking someone else's access. I'm also old!

However, I have found a good small garage who love working on my car, so I will print out your guide and take it to them when it goes in next Friday. Just hope the adjusters haven't seized after 15 years!

The adjusters should be fine. They are in a fairly watertight place (and the hole may even have a little rubber bung in it) and the ones I've mainly adjusted were on ten-to-fifteen year old Toyota's too, and they were fine.

All fixed today. 15 years and 115k miles of detritus removed from drum and adjusters ... adjusted!

Thanks everyone.
